Disclaimer: The load data in this post was obtained from my Lyman 49th Edition Load Manual, just because it proved safe in my gun does not mean it is safe in yours.

With that out of the way onto the range report.

First the loads:
NOE 180gr WFN cast from pure lead, gas checked and sized to .360 diameter.
12.0grs of 2400

***vs.***

Lee 358-105-SWC cast from WW alloy and sized to .360 diameter. (110gr actual weight)
14.0grs of 2400

For both loads Winchester 357mag brass and Federal small pistol magnum primers were used.

The Gun:
S&W 649

Holsters:
For the 180gr loads a DeSantis IWB holster was used.
For the 110gr loads I used my personal favorite an Alessi Shoulder holster.

The first target shown with the orange dots was shot with 25rds of the 180gr loads. 5rds fired slow SA from 15yards at the dot in the head (the loads patterned high and recoiled a good deal resulting in one round flying over the top of the paper), and then the remaining 20rds fired from 7yards at the dot in the chest. In-between reloads the gun was holstered, then drawn firing of 3rds as quick as possible DA, lowering the gun then coming back up and firing of the remaining 2rds.

The second target shown was shot with 30rds of the 110gr loads. 10rds fired slow SA from 10yards at the head, and the remaining 20rds fired in a similar fashion detailed out above, again from the 7yards line.

I will let the pictures do some talking now…

That one is a no brainer.............I'd go with the Lee 105 gr.

It clearly seems to be more accurate and more
controllable in your particular revolver.

I wonder what that 105 gr. bullet is clocking out of your revolver ?

Who'd a thunk it-a lighter recoiling boolit outshooting a much heavier boolit loaded hotter in a very light for the caliber gun. That load for the Lee boolit is lighter than the load I use with the RCBS 38-150 SWC--which weighs 40 grains more--while the 12 grain 180 load is up against the fire wall.

Now I'd probably carry the lighter boolit load myself, but this is more apples to oranges than a truly comparitive test.

Hmmm. I know what I'm loading for my new toy on its first trip to the range.

I was debating on what rounds to start with in it, now I know.

NOE's 180gr mold is a great design, and one I would highly recommend for hunting. However the 110grs proved to be far more controllable from the j-frame, yes most would guess that but I just had to try it.
