A more gun related build as advised ;)
We needed a few scabbards for our Winchester Model 70's, 1886's, and Scoped Marlin 1895's so the wife and I threw a few together.

So the leather came for my rifle scabbard builds...............................
100+ feet worth the 12 oz. *:P Yea I know it's heavy but if I soak it in the bath tub while the wife's gone it will take most any form.
Hope to come up with 8 total. 4 with hoods for bolt guns and 4 for lever guns.
I autopsied one scabbard I won off ebay and I think I'll order WG's pattern for the lever guns.
Wish me luck........ ::)
I'll post pics here as we get them done.

Just need to sew the hoods together.
The scabbards are all lock stitched by hand. No machines here.
The hard part was sticking an expensive rifle all oiled up into a garbage bag and wet forming the scabbard to fit the rifle. <shuddering>

That's some beautiful work on the saddles and the scabbards. Lots of work goes into a product like that.

I always enjoyed leather work when I was in Crafts Class in the 8th grade. We made our own tools out of 20d spikes.

Is this a hobby for you or is it a business? IF it is a hobby, you should turn it into a business. Lots of business to be had with the Cowboy Action shooters, and especially the horseback shooters.

I live in Ojai CA and between here and Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez there is alot of horses, and high dollar horse people. You might bring your stuff the the annual presidents ride in Santa Ynez, which ends in Solvang.

People like Bo Derek and other movie stars show up, as well as local and national dignataries. President Reagan used to attend, as he lived right up the hill from Solvang. It is quite the show.

They usually have a Custom Knife show which is a big draw as well. Bo Derek is just as good lookin' in person as she was in the movies. in fact "wow" doesn't begin to describe her.

Incidentially she is a big time horse person and a Republican!

Lots of opppurtunity for talent like yours.

Thank you Randy. It's just a hobby/neccessity We could for saddles so we picked up a few and we will be making period saddles for ourselves in the future. I just asked wifey and she said she had a couple extra scabbards she could part with. We didn't plan on making so many but they asked if we wanted 100 sq ft of 12 oz for a discount she said "sure". So we made them until the leather ran out.

Duke,

I joined the forum a few days ago and have been looking through the site and reading all kinds of threads. I can't believe that my first post has nothing to do with boolits but I feel compelled to tell you that you, sir, are a VERY fine craftsman/artist.

Your oak table pictures were impressive and beautiful but it's the leather work that amazes me.

Take care,

I made of 5 gallons of the best black leather dye in the world for $20.00. Also shows sample spots for both edges of the breast straps. Barbie like the larger spots.

Parts for breast straps to match a couple black saddles. :bigsmyl2: They need to be stitched up with white thread.

So a trip to the local feed store told me my leather for everything is to thin. So I used the part to make other parts and Barbie order 14 oz latigo and 15/17 oz skirting on the way.

Here's the thicker ones made from the 10 oz parts.

I will just use the thinner bridle parts for smaller horses for the girls so no loss. :bigsmyl2:

Nice work wished I could think about riding a horse again but with a broken back from year's ago I don't think that is a smart idea to test my fate on a horse and see if the back can take it.
I like the table you built too, I will never have a place big enough to put it or fellows strong enough to pick it up if I did have it.
You are one talented guy.

Thanks all. Yes we will get with you one that scabbard. Right now wifey is helping remodeling a hale whole of a building she found to open her tack and feed store. I'll post the link as soon as she's done with the website and store. The present project is 6 pairs of Tapaderos. Call my bluff and I'll post a pic. ;)

Randy

From the looks of it my wife has tried to sell a couple gun belts for 10 months on her not to name auction site with no success. She also tried to sell a couple scabbards and some idiot offered $47.00 for it. The original scabbard in the first few post sells for over $300.00 new and made from some water buffalo leather or something. So anyway thanks all for the compliments but as far as doing this as a business the rest of the world seems to look at what I/we made as worthless junk. Here's one for you, she did sell a used "Be-ang-kee" belt made at the Temecula plant for $140.00 on the same auction site. Man it was a ***. lol She felt guilty shipping it. She almost sent it with free shipping. So apparently if you don't have some Hollywood Rodeo Drive Boutique Brand on your product no one will buy it for sake of bragging rights.

Care to share your recipe for the black leather dye? I would like a dye that doesn't wear through in a month's use.

Just Duke
10-21-2015, 10:08 PM
This will dye the leather dead black all the way through for 100 years and not wear off or come off on anything.
Vinegaroo.
Distilled water, White Vinegar, and metal shavings. I use 0000 steel wool cut to 3/4 section.
Mix together. Any questions feel free to give me a jungle.
