What rate of twist recommended for Cast Boolits 300-405g? Fell upon a prepared action on GBroker and a standard stock as well. Plan on light sporterizing (shorten, delete upper hand guard, install recoil pad) the military wood since few new mfr sporter stocks out there. Thinking 20" barrel...

Opinions? Suggestions? Mocking comments?

Twist rate 20-22" The old trapdoors were 22". The 45-90 Winchester with a 300 grain lead used a 1 in 30 and called it an express, I always though this was a bit slow.

I'd look up and see what some of the BPCR shooters are using now a days.....have they gone down to 18"? They will be shooting heavier boolits than what you are looking to shoot though.

Badge176,

I built a 45-70 on a Siamese back when they were common and if I remember correctly the twist was 1 in 18 or 1 in 20". It shoots as good as you can hold it with any bullet I've put through it.

You say you're going to sporterize the military stock and remove the hand guard. I'll buy the handguard if you would like to sell it as I have two in full military dress, but one needs a handguard.

Good luck on your project, I predict you'll like it.

I've had a 450-400-70 (45-70) Siamese mauser since I built mine in '75. It has a 22" twist barrel. It's shootse cast bullets from 210 to 500 gr from 800 fps to 2300 fps extremely well and every jacketed bullet also. A 20 or 22" twist will do very well with any load you'll want to shoot through your rifle. A faster twist is not needed at all.

Larry,

That looks like one serious adult toy. I would think that with appropriate loads you could
literally hunt anything on the planet.

I had 1-20 twist in mine and t woked fine for everything. The max load from oe of those will drop anything you shoot at and hit.

Yes, that lee 500 gr bullet at 2050 fps equals many 500 gr 458 mag velocities. I push the Barnes Original 400 gr SP right at 2300 fps which puts it well into the range of most .416s. Note the Pachmyer Triple Magnum recoil pad; at 8 1/2 lbs for the loaded rifle those loads let you know you've pulled a trigger. When bench shooting (only when I have to!!!) I often think I'm shooting with Joe Fraizer as after each shot i think he nailed with his right cross:veryconfu

I built the rifle origianlly to go into pole patches after elk as any shot you get there is usually a Texas heart shot. I found that 500 gr Lee will go from one end of an elk and out the other........one time..............very messy gutting.....won't ever take a Texas heart shot again..........:dung_hits_fan:

I don't have it any more, but mine had a 1-20" (and a synthetic stock). Guy I sold it to used it in Africa, claimed a 1-shot elephant and a 2-shot buffalo.

Those are indeed, nice rifles. I would like very much like to have one in the 45-70 caliber chambering.
I went to a gun show here in Eugene, Oregon a couple of weeks ago. I did see a Siamese
mauser for sale, for 375.00. It was original, but looked like it had definately been around
the Horn.
Can someone give me a ball park figure, as to what would be a decent price for a decent
original rifle?
Thank you.

I was shopping round for a bit on GunBroker (known for elevated prices in most cases) and watched actions going for $200- 300. I purchased the $200 unit! Stocks look to be few and far between...

Mine is a 1-22 twist, and 24" long. Shoots Jacketed and cast very well. From plinking loads to shoulder thumpers, I have not tried any load that didn't shoot pretty good right from the start.
I'd suggest a sporter type stock over a reworked military-will probably help dampen some of the recoil. Also, don't make it too light.
Here's mine, I took it to ER Shaw for the barrel (they are just on the other side of Pittsburgh from me), and did everything else myself.

Are there any other bolts besides the original Siamese which will fit this action?
Have a couple barreled actions and would like some bolts for them.
Are any other Mauser components interchangeable?
Had information on this at one time[smilie=b: and now-who knows where it is.
Thanks.

Hello Kywoodwrkr:

The Siamese Mauser was an "intermediate action". I have heard that the bolt from a M48 Yugo will fit this receiver. I have not tried this myself, but have read that it works. Best of luck.

KY, There's a guy on gunbroker selling Parker Hale commercial bolts (stripped) for $60.00. They've been modified for a tacticool bolt knob (oh boy.....) My experience so far is that the (98 mauser bolts seem to interchange (don't quote me). Numrich is selling commercial 98 Mauser receivers for about the same. I have to add that there are some bolts for 98s that are a little shorter, say 6 7/8 " overall, possibly Czech BRNO 98s (I'm not sure), maybe model 24s.
