I'm hoping someone can help me out.
Last weekend at the St. Peter, MN gunshow
I got a few sets of grips, supposedly all for S&W revolvers,
most were baggied and marked, this set wasn't.
there is a seemingly maker's (model ?) number "ink stamped" on
the inside of the both panels...81043

I'm not good at identifying exotic woods, is this Coco Bolo ?

I don't have a J frame revolver, is that what these are for ?
It may be hard to see in the photo's but the Round portion
of the inletting...where S&W usually put a steel disc...and fits
just under the area where the Hammer is. This rounded area
is smaller than all of the Guns I have posted pictures with.
Also, the locating pin near the butt is about ¼" farther back
on these grips than the guns in the photos.

Any ideas ?

maybe Taurus or LLama? Taurus and Llama had some models quite visually similar
to S&W, never tried to exchange grips, tho.

The "J" frame pins are centrally located. I would have to got with what MtGun said about it being for another make and not a S&W.

They were made by the defuct Mustang grip folks and fit the Colt "I" frame. This is the Python, OM Trooper, Official Police and the like.

Char-Gar,
when you say OM Trooper...is the OM mean Old Model ?
I ask because my Daughter has a Trooper MKIII,
which I'd assume is not a Old model.

The Trooper Mark III uses a stock that is cut different on the inside top of both pieces, instead of the half circle relief to support the stock at the top, the Mark III(Colt "J" frame) is cut straight diagonally. No other Colt stocks are cut that way.

Guesser,
well that's a bummer :(

PS. I had a python some years back...I wasn't impressed.

I had a very similar set of grips on my S&W Model 37.
I got them dirt cheap at a closeout sale, IIRC they may have been one of the Charles Daly brand imports.
I bought several Charles Daly brand products at that sale, so I may be remembering it wrong.

The wood was not hard to customize and required no refinishing after fine sanding and rubbing down with steel wool. Whatever finish these had permeated the wood, or was a natural oil in the wood that acted like a oil finish.

Nice looking grips when I got done with them, but recoil of the lightweight Mod 37 (mine had the original alloy cylinder so it weighed about 3 oz less than a Chief's special) was like catching a line drive without a glove.
Still once contoured to my hand, which is a bit messed up, point shooting was very much improved.
I like the color and grain of these.

OK......I bought the gripset from Jon, and having a wide array of revolvers on hand.....I figured the set would fit SOMETHING in the safe.

To begin, the pics don't do the gripset's condition justice--they are like-new. NICE CONDITION.

First try was made with the Colt D-frame.......kinda/sorta close, but too big. Colt I-frame.......closer, but not quite right. Ruger Redhawk--way too small. The S&W frames already didn't pass muster, so I'm not sure what these stocks should fit. Colt J-frame (Mk III/Mk V)? Colt New Service? Ruger Security/Speed Six? None of those in-house (yet), so the stocks will remain in the gripset warehouse (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale 12-pack box) until called to service upon the arrival of some needy revolver.

Was Taurus making revolvers when Mustang was making grips ?

Maybe Rossi was ? but I'd assume they'd have copied S&W

Guesser already mentioned they won't fit a Trooper MK III

I hope you find a match for them someday.

SOMETHING always turns up, Jon. 6 daughters--2 nephews--3 sons-in-law (most of whom shoot) keep the stock of war toys and their accessories depleted/turning over. 10/22 rifles and HKS speed-loaders are short-lived acquisitions hereabouts, and gripsets go almost as fast.
