I couldn't turn this one down today.
You know the remainder of the story...
these kind of revolvers have a way
of following you home.

You don't see hundreds of these.....

Ken, I dropped a .430" ( double checked with my Starrett Mike )lubed and sized cast bullet into each of the 6 cylinder throats, the bullets didn't fall out of any of them. I could push it through with a pencil with little to no effort however. The cylinder mouths must be a fairly consistent .430" - .4305"

I interpret that as a " good start ".

That is what you would call a no-brainer. You likely didn't even have to think about buying it. The phrase "I will take it" probably just rolled off of your tongue. I would love to have a 4 inch ersion.

Beautiful revolver!

Gold bead sights lead to accurate shooting.

I know what you mean... I did it - twice.

Both 624 ND and approved for full house loads.

May I suggest the Lyman 429421 over 6.5g W231. Just @ 50fps less than the Skeeter, but so easy to shoot and almost as hard hitting.

Very nice Ben!!!

I love my 624, it's a pure joy to shoot. I've owned mine for 5+ years now & have only shot wc boolits in it. These revolvers eat them like candy & spit them ot in the same hole shot after shot after shot.

Enjoy your new pistol, you're in for a real treat.

Nice score. I had a 3" 624 and in a moment of stupidity sold it. Been kicking myself in the a$$ ever since.

Nice, Ben.

My wife surprised me with a NIB 6 1/2" Lew Horton Special Model 624 Christmas present, many years ago. Since then, I've picked up a 3" Lew Horton Special Model 24.

The 624's serial number is outside the recall range and the cylinder has the stamped "F", which I, too, have read indicates that it's passed muster.

Both guns have .432" cylinder throats, but after some judicious modifications, the Lyman 429421 drops an appropriately dimensioned boolit.

Enjoy it.

I note the bead front sight. What is the proper sight picture when using a bead vs. a ramp,,,,

That's one fine wheel gun, I hope to find a 624 that nice someday.
My P/R 629 gets me by for now

A beauty for sure.

I'd love to find one with a 4" barrel!

Very nice,....... do your cylinders have an " F " stamped on them ?

Ben

FWIW, the "F" means nothing in so far as strength and safety. What it means I can not say, but it does not mean safe to fire. S&W only marked the boxes with a red C in a circle. No markings on the revolver at all to indicate "safe".

I contacted S&W and had them give me the "all clear".

If you need the contact info, PM me.

Now what about the barrel, less than 430 I hope.

That is the sort of gun that would GRAB my attention.

Ben, you are gonna love that 624 with the 6.5" bbl. Course the 44 special is just the icing on the cake. I have one like yours, a 24 w/4" bbl and a lew horton with the 3" bbl. N frames rule!!

Hot Dawg that is nice.
I confess I'm feeling a twinge of envy.
N frames are a thing of beauty for sure.

Like I said Ben, the F is meaningless.

Email Kate, she'll get back to you.

She told me personally that S&W didn't mark the guns at all in regards to this issue.

The "F" is a random thing unrelated to the safety issue.

Nice! Light contour "Mountain Gun" bbl, but in 6" length is new to me.

MtGun44,
Memory says:
They were a one-off, 1985 production for the Lew Horton distributorship, and differed from the standard production (Target?) models. Barrels were tapered (as you noticed) and lengths were 6 1/2" on a square butt frame, and 3" on a round butt frame. Choice of blue or stainless.

Ben,
At .430 - .4305 for your cylinder it should be about perfect. What are you going to size at? I had a S&W 629 that had a cylinder that miked about the same as yours and I sized at .431 and it shot very well using the Lyman 429244.

The 44 special is arguably the finest calibre ever made. But I'm highly predjudiced in that direction.

I'm thinking of 2 lots ........., A = .430 and B = .431, ....shoot both, then we'll go from there and hopefully see if the revolver has a preference ? ?

I wholeheartedly agree. There is something "Special" about the cartridge.

I have both the 624 with 4" barrel and a 624 with a 6½" barrel. They have given me some of the most pleasurable shooting I have had. I bought them when they first hit the market. Both of mine have the Red "C" on the box.

Here is one of my favorite targets of all time - this was shot with the 6½" standing at 25 yards in front of witnesses (if that is important):

FWIW, Ben--my 624's throats spec just like yours, and .431" #429421s shoot VERY WELL, to 1100 FPS. 90% of its shooting gets done with Skeeter's 7.5 grains of Unique, though.

Congrats Ben! And a gold bead to boot! I love my 4" 624. I searched for it for two years and drove 240 miles to get it. I haven't seen one at any of the guns shows I frequent in 3 or 4 years for any price. I had a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake with the inside-out straps made for mine and can carry it concealed under a t-shirt if I need to.

Nice score! You are well armed sir!
