This for a buddy's gun. I have the LEE 454-300 GC mold and works GREAT in his gun:

but for production reasons I want to use the ranchdog 290-GC tumblelube mold:

http://www.ranchdogoutdoors.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_5_28&products_id=25

The bullets look pretty much the same. Are they different enough (traditional vs tumble grooves) to warrant testing before just going for it? I don't want to buy it and find out the lube grooves alone make the bullet not workable.

I've asked for a sample on the boolit exchange forum, but I'm not sure that will prove successful.

So! does success with lee suggest I will achieve success with ranchdog? Can I just tumble lube the LEE I have and try it, if it works than the ranchdog works?

Is there a difference in mold quality between RD and Lee std? since the lee works, would I be better off just buying the LEE?

A couple suggestions. 1- You could always get the lee 6 cavity mold to speed up productivity and 2- try them with the tl and see how they work. They may work just as well, better or maybe worse.

The lee 6 cavity molds and the RD I believe are the same quality. The difference is the ranchdog moulds are custom ordered.

Definite maybe. . . . . .

Only if someone has tried both can you know.

Good luck. Personally, not a fan of TL designs.

Try tumble lubing the boolits you are shooting now. If that works, get a 6 cavity version of that mold. There is nothing wrong with tumble lubing boolits with grease grooves.

The other boolit may work also, but there are no guarantees.

I tend not to like Lee boolits.

If I only shot them in my BFR I'd agree. But I will be darned if they didn;t do 1.5" groups at 100 yards in an X-frame. I know that because I broke the target stand which was using 1x2 wood verticals :)

One day I will get my BFR to do this. With 5 holes. But in the black, not off the paper :)

You should see the steel rail on my target stand! Bad habit of putting cans on it and a low hit goes through a BUNCH of thick square tube steel.
I use some TL boolits and like the RD for my .44 but I lube with Felix.
