I got a 90 lb ingot of what i thought was pure lead from the doe run facility. when i smelted it down i got a gold color dross on top that was flaky and when you stirred it it turned to powder and you could not skim it off fast enough. it oxidized that fast. has anyone seen this or know what it could be?

It's not unusual to see the gold color you describe on a pure lead melt. The excessive drossing you're experiencing could be caused by very dirty lead......I've seen it when melting down sewer pipe seals. I'd suggest you stay with it, and just continue fluxing and removing the dross until it cleans up.

I usually get extra dross also when I overheat the lead, once it melts, turn down the temp.

heat control will definately help.
you can dross out an entire pot of pure lead.
get the heat down to about 650-700 and just make your ingots.
you'll most likely see a blue tint to the lead when done, and a rainbow swirl will form on the lead.
you have some good stuff there.

smelted down the dross i skimmed off earlier (at a much lower temp) and fluxed the snot out of it, and recovered 12 lbs of lead that i was about to discard!!! wow pure lead is some funny stuff!!!

How much dross did did you end up with?
