I have a couple of dumb questions. My first question is can I take a garden variety 336 and get it rebored to 38-55? Will the action accomodate the round? If this is possible, does anybody know of a gunsmith they would trust to do the work? I would like to make it look like a 336ADL or modern 1895, 22 or 24" barrel and 3/4 length mag. The other question is what would somebody here pay for a 336 in .219 zipper? I saw one at a gun show with a crossbolt safety. Did they ever come any other way? The one I saw was $1200.00. I thought that was kind of high, but, I thought I would ask here first. Thanks for the help guys.

Just a comment on the Zipper - if you saw one with a xbolt safety, it wasn't original. They were only made until about 1960, long before the silly safety. I dunno that I'd pay $1200 for one even if I wanted one. Seems you could convert a 336 for less. Mebe not. Regards, Woody

There is a place in Cottage Grove Oregon that does re-bores for about $250. The 38-55 will fit your 336 as long as it is based on the 30-30 case. Mark.

I pulled this add off the Guns America site. I have not had any dealing with this fellow, but have heard good things from a couple folks that have had rifle rebored by him. Seems like a pretty good deal for about 150 bucks.

That's the guy. Price seems cheaper than I remember but you know how it is when you get older. I have seen samples of his work at gun shows. He uses ugly looking guns but the bores sure look nice.

TedH and Crazymark thanks for the heads up. Has anybody got first hand experience with this guy?

That 219 must have been put together. The last 219 Marlin rolled out of the factory before I was born IIRC. Unless some one made a special order. Could be an old barrel on a new recv'r too. I'd like one for sure.

I don't, but there was at least a couple guys on Leverguns.com and maybe Marlinowners.com that have reported good results on rifles they sent him.

JES does a nice job of reboring from .30-30 to .38-55 I am told. He uses a 3 groove rifling and it does well with cast bullets. I have seen his work but dont own a rifle that he has rebored.
