A friend's father left this to him, but we have no idea what it is (besides a LeMAt-looking, cap & ball black powder pistol)... 6 holes in the cylinder I recall, but no LeMat 20g barrel underneath.

Are you sure it's a caplock? the guard, hammer and general shape scream pinfire to me, but perhaps my eyes are playing tricks on me?

ETA:
Also, the rod to the side appears to be an ejector rod

It looks like an old Belgian pinfire revolver, ca 1870, IMHO.

I'd wager it's stamped "ELG" somewhere................
