Need help making up my mind so help if you can the choices are:
1. H&R Bufflo clasic 1871 c 45/70 with Lymon target sights 32" barrel, has anyone had any expierence with this rifle?
2. A Puma lever gun M92 in 45 Colt, which would be best?
I am leaning twoward the H&R because of the 45/70 always wanted a rifle in that cartage, but I love the 45 Colt and a 92' lever would be nice.
HELP
Boolits are no problem as I have molds for both.

Never had either, but I would go hands down for the 45/70.
It has much longer effective range.
I am in fact going to have one fitted to my Handi this summer.
As for the 45LC, that gun will also shoot a 454, which helps the range a bit.
If a scope matters, check the Puma out real well.
I have heard rumor they are not exactly scope friendly.

Where do you normally shoot? What are the ranges that you like to shoot. Do you go to the desert and dump 10 as fast as you can? Will you use the Holy Black or standard propellants with the 45-70? If you want the other one in 3-5 years how hard will it be to find one? Do you want to shoot cowboy action or some other games or try plinking at 600-1000 yds? I would think that the H&R is not a competion ready arm but have never been bitten hard by the 45-70 bug just had it buzz around the ears a bit. I am a fan of the 92 in all it's forms and you may have reasons I didn't think of. Good luck with it. Gianni.

I have a Puma 92 in .454 Casull. I view it as a short range brush gun and plinker, and bought it just because I like the 92 action and compactness. It will hold 12 rounds, if that makes a difference to you. I'm pushing 330 gr. boolits to nearly 2000 fps., which puts the gun well into 45/70 power category. However, the 45/70 certainly has the advantage for heavier boolits.

I have a 32" 45-70 barrel on my NEF handi rifle, I have a 3-9x40 Redfield mounted on it. My only issue with the rifle is that I am a little goofy looking walkin through the woods in search of whitetails. It is like rabbit hunting heavy brush with a goose gun. The barrel is just to long for the way I hunt.

The rifle will shoot 1 hole groups at 100 yards with 240gr hollow points-515gr pointed bullets, all lead. I have maybe 20 rounds through the rifle of j-bullets and everything else close to 500 rounds is lead.

You cant go wrong with a NEF 45-70, I dont think I have ever read anything negative about them. They are soild, accurate, and reliable. If you plan on hunting with it other than in a stand you might want to go with the shorter barrel, like I said that is my only issue.

You can also send your frame into NEF and get the new 45 colt barrel, I dont have one but I just read about 4 people slugging different rifles and all coming out with .452 bores.

I have the .454 Puma. It is very easy to like this rifle. It can shoot cowboy action lite 45's to heavy 454 loads. If you're looking for something to give your shoulder a thump, I'd recommend the Puma.

Thanks for the response, I will post when I get the new ________ to let you know what happnes. I was looking at both on the web last night I have a simple solution, get one now and next month get the other. My wife said that was fine as long as I can pay for it out of my gun money. Well I can so I have her permission how bout that.

I'd get on that straight away, both have their merits and both are great guns.

Ordered the 45/70 this morning, it is wonderful to work for a FFL I get them at his cost, but it keeps me broke all the time.
I work part time at a archery and gun shop. I am retired but found that there was not enough money for my toys so I work part time.

I have both a 45 Colt Puma and a Handy rifle in 45-70 and like both of them for different reasons. I use the Puma for plinking and cowboy shooting and the handirifle for cowboy long range matches and hunting. Both are fine rifles but do have different uses. As for scoping a puma you would need a custom scout mount or and ofset side mount due to the ejection pattern of the rifle.

I have the Buffalo Classic in 45-70, I really like the rifle. I am shooting a 405 grain bullet over IMR 3031. I load them to about 1550 fps. Very accurate, I have the stock sight on it, but am thinking about the upgrade sight. I would like to find someone to do an action job on the rifle, trigger pull is a bit heavy.

I have to say the sights on the buffalo classic sucks for me!for my rifle at 100 yards
I'am tap out on elevation need lower front LYMAN front globe like 0.404 high instead
of the.584 one I don't understand why they would put a high sight on a slug chunker like that I shoot black out of that rifle so 1300 FPS with 405 gr slug so I guess just more money for their stupidity or maybe my rifle is not wright what have you guys seen I have only shot this rifle on one outing and maybe it.s just mine

Of all my rifles my Buffalo Classic .45-70 would be the last I'd get rid of, and that's saying a lot 'cuz I've got lots of real good guns. It ain't the best long-range prairie dog rifle but it's about the most all-around gun I own. I shoot silhouettes with it, I hunt big game with it... if I had only one gun I could do it all with this great gun. If you need some load advice or just want some good recipes just ask... I'd be glad to share. Mine shoots MOA with all the jacketed and cast bullets I load for it. And it'll handle anything I'll ever want to shoot. The little lever guns are fun, too, but they won't do what the BC .45-70 will.

rroberts, contact me, I can set you up with a trigger job guide, very simple took me about an hour if I remember correctly. Mine broke at about 6 pounds when I got the rifle, now it is down to about 2.5 pounds.

Buffalo classic 45-70 under $425.00 here in SW PA. Get some Speer Territory bullets 405gr and sized .459. Then you place 2 pyrodex pistol pellets that's two 30gr pellets and use a wad on top of them and crimp. If you have a Lee loader in 45-70 you could load them up out in the woods if you had too. I get great groups with the sights that come with the H&R BC. Just change the front insert ,till your happy with the sight picture at hunting range. I'm new to this sight. I live in Greene Co,PA Name's Jim 44-40.

I have mine coming will be here Tuesday, have three molds for the 45/70 one is a 300 Pb , a 405 HB and a 450 GC we will see what they do. Thanks for the load with the pellets sounds like something that I will try.
I have read about this rifle and the positive far out weighs the neg., even looked at the origional type sights, might instal them some day but not now. As I said I get the same cost as my FFL does because I help him when he need to go do some business.

Just sent in my Handi-Rifle to get it repaired last week.
I have a .500, and it pops open during heavy recoil about every 5-6 shots.
No bigie I am told, and an easy fix.
Also getting it fitted with 45 LC and 357 mag barrels while its there.
I always liked the 45 LC, and I intend on taking the 357 mag out to 357 max dimensions, and putting a good scope on it.

I am in the process of working up a load for my Buffalo Classic 45/70 and would appreciate any input as far as using/not using the gas check bullets as far as accuracy goes.

I have two molds for my 45/70 that I like to use, a 340 gr. PB and the 405 gr. HB. At this time I do not have a GC bullet mold. Just trying to cut down the cost of each round but if accuracy would improve with the GC I would be glad to get the proper mold for using a GC bullet.

I should add that with my load using the 340 gr. PB bullet and 30 gr. of 4198 at a Velocity of around 1500 fps. I do not have any leading issues, just concerned with better accuracy. Thanks
