Has anyone ever used the Lyman 358627 mould for their .357 Magnums? I have not seen many of them but found that it might be worth trying out.

I bought mine to shoot in a 356 Winchester. It did OK. I have used it with good results in the 357 Max Handi-rifle and in an older DW 357 that I no longer have. I have not gone heavier than the 195 gr 358430 in my blackhawk which is the only 357 I currently own. Glen had a nice write up in the LASC site that Cbrick administers. I think it was entitled a bullet for all seasons.

Yeah, Glen's article is great! I've got a Lee six-cavity GB mold that is a copy of the 358627. Throws beautiful boolits that worked great out of my .357 Max Encore barrel and accounted for many Iowa whitetails. Then I foolishly sold the Max barrel...but I still hang on to my .35 cal molds. It interesting because there are two crimp grooves, which would seem to be one for .357 Mag and the other for .38 Spec, but they aren't quite right for max COAL in either cartridge in a NMBH Ruger at least. If you're interested in trying some in your .357 Mag I'd be happy to cast some up for you.

David:

I have an original and a couple custom variations of that mold. If selmerfan supplies you with the solids I can send a few HPs ! I use it for .357MAX.

Here are Glen's articles.

I tried it in a Dan Wesson .357 Maximum years ago. It was OK, but not great. I was shooting in some local silhouette matches at the time and just never quite got the accuracy I was getting from the RCBS 38-162 SWC. I drifted away from the hobby and one day that gun was worth more to somebody else than it was to me. The mold went with it and truth to tell, I don't miss either.

This has got to be one of the (if not the) prettiest boolits I ever seen in my life. Nice!!!!!http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/love.gifhttp://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/adore.gif
(my Wish List is turning into a Wish Book)

I bought this mould on a whim at a gun show about 10 years ago, mostly because it was different from anything I had at the time.

It sat unused for a while because, honestly, I didn't know what to do with it. It looked too heavy for my .357 Mag. and I didn't have a .357 Max.

After reading Glen Fryxell's article on the boolit, I tried it in the .38 Spec. THAT was a very cool combo!!! Easy to shoot and hits hard.

Funny thing is, I bought the mould after I saw it on the dealer's table THE DAY BEFORE. I actually went back the next day to see if he still had it. After seeing what these moulds fetch on Ebay, I'm bloody glad no one else at the show knew what to do with it, either!!!

Mike.

I shoot in a BlackHawk, 5 inch. Seems that it runs a little under 1200 fps with WC 820. Good load, not as good as a Ballisti Cast 200 Keith bullet. That one does 1233 fps and groups very well. Keep trying the 358627 in my 35/348 IMP but it may be shot out, nothing including J bullets want to group anymore.

I have one I bought for the 35 Whelen. I haven't used it in the 357 that I recall, but you can start with 358430 ( or whatever Lymans 200 gr RN is) data. In a K or L frame or Ruger it should do fine, In a N frame with the short cylinder...I dunno.

Use it in both the .38 & .357. Groups well and prints high. Have killed a few pigs with it and it was a stellar performer. Very good penetration. I really like it in the .38.

I have an original I bought new and have used those boolits in my DW .357 Supermag for both silhouette and deer with great results over the years with water quenched alloy.
Don't hunt much or shoot silhouette anymore but that mold still drops nice boolits for the DW and a .35 Remington Contender and still accurate at the range.
BTW - those hollow points are some of the nicest boolits I've seen and would love to cast some of those too!;-)

I have one of Lyman's original two cavity moulds. Found it new on a shelf at a muzzle loader
shop of all places. Casts a really nice 218gr bullet with my WW alloy I use. Only tried it in my
Marlin 1894C loaded in .38 Special cases and 9.0gr of AA#9. Does 1231fps out of the 1894C and seems to hit the back stop with unabated fury! I'm also gonna try it in my 35 Remingtons, my 358 Winchesters, my 35 Whelens and also my .350 Remington Magnum. I only just purchased the mould this past Spring. I got it cheap cause it was on shop's clearance shelf. Read Glen's article on it and went back to the shop and bought it. Thankfully it
was still on the shelf. The bullet does have two crimp grooves, one for the .38 Special/357 Magnum and one for the .357 Maximum.

David:

Have you considered the NOE 38-200 variation of that design?
I can send you a few if you would like to try it !

I have one of the Lyman two cavity molds. I have used it seated out to the lower crimp groove in a Winchester Model 94AE, in front of H110. It worked okay, except I didn't see any deer the year I used it.

I haven't tried it from my GP-100.

It won't feed in my 98 Mauser in .35 Whelen. One of these days I'll have to fix that.

It's a good shooter in my Mauser actioned 35 Whelen; I've shot some of my best groups with it. But like Robert reports, it doesn't feed well.
