I have a Monson Dan Wesson 41. I am planning on ordering a mold from Mountain Molds. Twist rate is 1 in 18 3/4. I have heard the Leadhead 285gr bullets go unstable at about 175 yards in the Dan Wessons and I will probably use it for an occasional bigbore match. (If I every get a free weekend.).

Any ideas on max bullet weight to keep it stable?

The MM site bullet-design software has a recommended rifling twist rate function, I believe. "Run yer numbers" and see what falls out.

In theory, there is no difference between practice and theory. In practice, there is. I appreciate the offer of the 295's, I do have some of the leadheads 285's and will load those up when I get round toit. Still working on the hornet, but it looks like I am getting there with it.

my old DWA 6" .41 will shoot 285 SSK plain base very well to 100 yards beyond that no clue

Mark...

Dunno about "heavies" in the 285-295 gr range but I shot an 8" DW .41 Mag in IHMSA competition for several years using cast boolits...and actually, won a couple of state championships in the process. Load was a hard-cast 240 grain GCTC from an NEI mould over, essentially, a full case of IMR4227 lit off by a Federal 155 primer. Out of my gun, 200 yd groups (iron sights) ran 6"-8" consistently and I can't ever recall "ringing" a ram.

If it won't range well, a boolit with smaller meplat might solve the problem. Also, of course the twist rate should be checked out, though Super mags should get enough velocity to shoot things that the regular mags can't (in cases of marginal twist rates). A .44 will shoot 300s until the cows come home, that seems like a muy heavy boolit for a .41 though.

my 255 grain ogf with a 70 percent metplat shoots two inch groups at 75 yards and ragged hole groups at 25 in my ruger bisley hunter.not tried it out further since most of the deer I shoot are under this distance and use my 454 casull if I think I might need to reach out any farther.seems to be a good one in my gun and shoots well with every powder that works in 41 mag.

imo for what its worth bullets much over 250 in the 41s hurt more then they help. Ive yet to see one that flew well at real long ranges and even in penetration testing they dont do much better then the 250s. Best all around heavy 41 ive fourn is the lbt 250lfngc. Its accurate in every 41 ive tried it in and it shoots like a rifle out to long ranges.
