Found a scrapyard with a 80% full 55 gal. drum of WW, anyone want to venture a guess as to the weight of such.

My guess is about 2000lbs but I could be WAY of the mark.

Sorry no prizes for the best guess.

Figure a full 5 gallon bucket weighs around 135-140.

137/5 = 27.4 lbs/gallon

55 gallons * 80% = 44 gallons

Therefore my guess is 27.5 * 44 = 1205lbs + whatever the empty barrel weighs. :)

If it's at a scrap yard, they will be able to tell you the exact weight.
You're not gonna bring it home in the trunk of your buick.

I was going to say 1200 to 1300 lbs. Too much to lift.

I am pretty sure this topic has been beat to a pulp. The search engine should enlighten you more.

I gotta jump in!

1,650 * .80 = 1,320 lbs.

Whatever it weighs, it will weigh considerably less after I haul it to your house for you!

You ever notice that when people get those really great finds that the location is somewhat lacking. I guess if I ever came across a deal like that I wouldn't advertise it much either.

1200 sounds reasonable and 40 for the bbl.

Yep, you take your location off your profile before starting a thread like this!

Also depend's on how much water's at the bottom of the drum.
I just smelted down a couple really nice, clean looking 5 gallon pail's.One of them had about 2 inch's of water at the bottom. I put the wet WW on the top of the WW I stacked into the melt pot. Give's the water a chance to evapourate before melting.
When somebody say's their ready for melting, double check.

My question is are they letting it go and did you buy? Second question (and you don't have to answer if you don't want to) HOW MUCH? [smilie=w:

No I haven't bought it yet, and that is why I wanted a better weight estimate than my guess.

Price is .60c per lb,so if I take say 1000 lb I'm looking at $600.00 . I'm not doing any compettitive shooting at this time and at 64yrs of age this would probably last me two life times.

Sooo, I've been thinking maybe I could melt this down and sold most of it to finance maybe some other shooting irons.

However, if I look at the logistics it does not make sence.
1000 lbs of lead at $600.00 Melted to probably +- 900 lbs selling at a $1.00 per lb
gives me the great sum of $300.00 gross profit LESS money for fuel, gass, time spent for sorting, melting, packaging, etc, etc.

If I buy $600.00 worth of boolits I could probaly get about 10m or more which will
last me a long time.

I guess I will just buy 200 lb for casting for my self.

I take my hat off to people who sell lead for a $1.00 per lb shipping included.

60¢ is too high. Point out some of the steel weights and valve stems in there, then offer 45¢

The people selling lead for $1 (shipped) didn't pay 60¢ a pound for it unless it was clean and ready to pour into ingots. Most probably got free lead that needed a lot of work.

Ive been paying .30/lb for WW that are about 90% lead, that seems quite high. If they were large weights and no FE/ZN or other trash in the barrel Id consider .50/lb, just to pick up a large quantity at once.
