How critical is the head dia when chambering?
Head space @.043 rim but can the head relief OD be say up to .312?
Some relieved barrels seem close fit to rim, but relieved bolt heads seem to be larger, does it really matter? The extractor seems more inportant fit for proper function.

Some of the old Stevens were about 3/8", but then they didn't have high velocity ammo back then.

Depends on the gun, some are not recessed into the barrel at all but the bolt is. Think Ruger Mark I, II,III.
