Hope this isn't a rerun.

First time I'd seen it.
I'm torn between liking it (it does go bang), being mildly afraid, (it is an unaimed anvi falling out of the sky) or being repulsed by the anvil abuse. (his shooters nicer than my user).
Thanks for the share

Ever time I see a video of that, I wonder if trading an anvil for a pellet stove was my best idea.
I guess I will just make a golf ball cannon with the big chunk of bronze I have.

They had a show on TV last fall about the compition that they have every year in Missouri. I might try to make it down there this year to watch.

I mean, come on! We're talkin' Holy Black and shooting IRON!

That reminds me, I need to get off my backside and build a drum forge this spring.

Old news here. I used to work with a guy at Georgia Public Television that was into anvil shootin' and he belonged to a club of anvil shooters. They have some kinda semi-finals that are held in Atlanta, GA, if I can recall. He, Johnny J., was into black powder shootin' out of his 7 1/2" old Colt revolver. He's the guy that told me of the old western baloon .45 Colt cases that actually held 40 grains of BP that he used to reload for BP. He and the Art Director were into the western cowboy shootin' club. Of course he gave me the history of the .45 Colt, revolver and cartridge. He said that the old designation for the Colt .45 was .45 - 40, just like the .44 - 40 because the old cases were designed as black powder cartridge cases and each caliber held 40 grains of black powder. Personally, I've never seen the baloon type Colt .45 cases, but prob. someone here has a few and perhaps even more stories of the old black powder cartridges that would be a great topic in the black powder section. But as far as anvil shootin', I believe it goes back several generations and then some. BC

I've seen it once at a knife show, where the smithy's shot their anvils at the end of the show. It is a hoot.

Black powder has always been very easy and cheap to make.
In the hands of children of any age, and sooner or later, stuff starts soaring.
I made it as a teenager and am working on a batch as soon as the weather clears up and stays that way.
The ingredients are ready, I just need to mix and corn it.

The best part about shooting anvils is the great political history ;)

During Sherman’s march to the sea, Union solders destroyed anything of manufacturing or transportation value.
They tried to blow-up and destroy any anvils, but only made them fly.
Once dug back out, they were undamaged and still usable.
So to thumb their noses at the Govt and show their contempt for the Union, the Southern boys started reenacting Sherman’s shooting of the anvils.

Cheers, YV

The fandangle show at Albany Tx use to start with an anvil shoot some 40 or 50 years ago. Old story says an anvil went into the crowd and never more.

This sort of thing has my inner not-terribly-well-hidden pyro giggling madly.

It was a sport well before the Civil War. At least back to the 1830's as I have read history. This was common at least in the central part of the country.

ErikO Thanks for the invite. Yes , I have considered a tactical retreat many times .. but I'm not ready to give in just yet... believe it or not there are many people here that" get it" and are willing to fight. Keep up the good work in all the Free States.

"Science" channel had an hour-long show on Anvil Shooting a couple of months ago. There was at least one contestant injury from a pre-mature discharge during the competition. Hard to tell from the TV shots, but it looked like a 400 yard safety radius around the blasting zone. Kids, don't try this in your suburban backyard.

I'll have to back this sport. I'd cringe using a pound of powder at time but geez does it look fun.

I think they should add a category - Anvil Shoot for Distance.

I like it!

No lubing, no sizing, no cleaning, no leading...... And the boolit is perpetually reusable!

Man, that's th' stuff!

Since they already do it for height and accuracy is included with their scoring system I was thinking distance down range. What is the balistic coeficient of an anvil?

They could line up right next to the Punkin Chunkers in Delaware.

So I'm guessing "Anvil Catching" will not catch on as a Olympic Sport? :kidding:
