I've heard that the Remington 97-4 primer is a good primer to use because of the slower burn rate than the 209. Only problem is getting some because they've been out of production for so long. Just wondering if this is true

Aren't those a different size? I seem to remember 2 sizes of shotgun primers in my youth.

Yes they are a little bit shorter than a 209 but have the same diameter and have a small flash hole. they were made for .410.

Aha! Thank you. Was there another primer size too? I know I used to have a box of Alcan primers that would only fit Remington hulls.

I would stick to primers made for ML. I have pierced primers and cratered the firing pin using shotgun 209's.

Yes there use to be another size of primer that was a different dia than the 209. When I was a kid back in the 70's and early 80's I had a bunch of 12 ga hulls that used that odd ball primer. I think it was smaller in dia than the 209 but don't hold me to that. I was ever so glad to eventually get enough of those hulls lost and worn out so that I could toss the rest of them. I went over 20 years with out loading any shotgun shells, and finally a couple years ago when I picked it back up it was for my 28 ga and all the hulls I have take the 209.

Best wishes,

Joe

Yes, there was another size for Remington/Peters and some Alcan paper and brass shotshells it was the 57, it was slightly smaller in diameter. I think every manufacturer except Winchester made them. If I remember correctly, Remington switched to the 209 size in the 70's.

I knew it! I don't trust my memory much any more, so it's good to know somebody else knows about them too.
