i think i narrowed my choice for cow moose caliber, but then i went to see what load data i had. i dont have ANY. i have 195gr gc and 270gr gc for the 348, and 300gr plain base for the 405.
i wonder if the 71 will have a fast enough twist for the 270gr? anyone have a place i should look for load data for these two?

The old Lyman load books all have loads for the 348 and 405. You could probably just google up 405 loads and get a pretty good idea of what to use.

Both are more than adequate for any North American big game and that definitely would include moose. 300 grain plain base is the standard weight bullet for the 405 and when loaded to a MV of around 2000+fps will deliver around 3200 ft pounds of ME. The 348 was originally loaded with a 250 grain bullet (the most sought after mold is Lyman #349482) and at a similar velocity will generate around the same ME. Later factory loadings for the 348 used 200 grainers and they were also pretty potent. The older Lyman books do in fact have loads for both calibers and you can also do a web search for either and turn up good data for them. LLS

405 data is not too hard to find as people here have pointed out. however finding load data for a 270gr has been elusive for the 348. i have found data for 250gr and under, but nothing over that. it appears that 3031 is the powder of choice for the 250gr. anyone got a load for a 270gr or there abouts?

That .348 load with 3031 is a good load. It is almost identical to mine.

Good morning
The 1973 Lyman has loads for the 187 gr and the 255 gr boolits using 3031, 4198, 4227 and 2400. Ken Waters Pet Loads has good info on the 33 Win and 348.

38gr of 3031 chronos right at 1800 with my 270gr gas check round nose. i was going to keep going as i have no pressure signs, but then decided that 270gr at 1800 will do the job on a moose just fine. the gun is an antique so why push it. at 35 yards, the bullet leaves a .080 deep crater in 2" plate steel.

Handloader magazine, Dec. 2011, had a feature on loading the .348. Only jacketed bullets though.
