Hi All I am wondering what would happen if I tried a 316365 boolit in my 303 on thin skinned game (goats mainly) the boolit is cast 50/50 WW PB aircooled gaschecked and lubed with carnuba red if I was able to get to 1900fps how would they react in tissue?
I am thinking the pointed nose might bend and cause the boolit to yaw and tumble? anyone tried this?

A couple of autopsies will probably answer your question best. If there is any consistency let us know. Good hunting!

No I haven't.
But you could try filing of the nose for a flat point.
Or try a bit of alfoil in the mold and make a split nose.
Or a bloke I know of does that then puts them in a lathe and drills a hollow point to the lube grooves.
He's getting exploding water bottles at subsonic velocities with the back part going through like a small wad cutter.

That ought'ta do something to 'em.

Could try and file a bit off the nose into a spoon effect on the tip.
It will then tend to bend when it hits something.

Or soft cast the nose then use your harder alloy for the rest.
Cause I'd experiment a bit first abit thou.

Or just shoot'em in the head.

I did the "wet phone book" test with my 30/30 using the Lee 160 gr RNGC at 1550 fps about year or so back to find out just what would happen at 50 yards. I got fine penetration (17+ inches) and the boolit started tumbling at 6" making an absolutely vicious wound channel that would be very destructive to the meat.

I made a flat nose die from a 6.5 mm trim die. i would run a 311413 up it and trim things flat.It never did group well enough for me to try it on game. The louverin might do better trimmed.

Having shot numerous feral goats I doubt there is enough to the goat to cause the bullet to yaw and tumble unless you are making Texas heart shots. I'm afraid you will find that 316365 will slip right through the goats without much internal damage. Oh yes, with a properly placed shot they will die but they will probably go quite a distance before doing so and possibly be lost. That's not to mention the slow lingering death. Sorry, just not my cup of tea.......

If $s is a problem then I would suggest a Lee C312-185-1R from Midway at $19.49 + shipping would be a much better choice than the spitzer 316365. Even if $s are not a problem the Lee bullet with the RN is a much better choice and solution. I'd prefer the Lee bullet cast soft (WWs + 2% tin/ + 50% lead) and then HP'd with a 1/8" Forster tool to 3/16" deep for use on the goats and deer.

However, I see the "316" now and your .303 may not take the .312 Lee? If that's the situation then I would flatten the point as mentioned in posts above.

Thanks for the replies Larry I agree 100% I am using this rifle for pest destruction in a national park (CPM pest managment program part of the Sporting Shooters association Australia) I have been using a 150gr Taipan bullet but these are getting extremly hard to find
I have a few different moulds I have been playing with a NOE 314407 but it is a little on the small side I was getting a little bit of leading but was driving it hard (around 2000fps I was looking for) so may try and back it off to 1800-1900 and see what happens
I haven't used Lead on an animal before so am a little nervous I do not want wounded goats I do have a NOE 311 175Gr. FN with a HP from the current GB but it isn't being run untill November
moulds I have on hand are Noe's 314407 314284 316299 pus a couple of CBE's
the average distance we are shooting is beetwen 50-100y
I also have a 44/40 that I'm devolping loads for (Win '94) I've got 2 loads that shoot well in this rifle a 210gr flatpoint (NOE 432200 44/40 boolit) I won't list the load I am using but I'm getting 1600fps with a slow burning powder good accuracy and no leading I've been torture testing the starline brass to see if I get any failure so far I haven't lost a case
I also have the NOE 429421 in a RG2 I'm getting 1550fps with these HP's (235gr) I have been advised on this sight not to drive a 44/40 this hard but my rifle will not shoot at lower velocities I've tried a lot of differt powders around the 1300-1400fps mark it just won't group at all
so the 316365 was just an idea I thought I had read somewhere that a spirepoint lead boolit was inclined to yaw in tissue so I asked the question no goats were harmed in the asking of this question :) (well not yet anyway!!)
my bore slugs at .315"

I'm thinking that you couldn't find a worst .30 cal. bullet for use on big game, even though it shoots good in some of my guns.
