Here are some pics I promised in another thread. I am not a photographer, so bear with me. As you can see, there is plenty of meat in the cylinder walls for full-throttle loads, if one would so desire. It will soon has some grips from Executioner like are on the pictured 500JRH and Grover #5.

Thanks

Aaron

So you like the shorties....? So how brutal is that .480 load. I have a .480 but its a 9 1/2" SRH. I am enjoying the caliber though. I'd like to have a SBH Bisley Hunter .44mag converted to a 5 shot .480 but thats would require a small second mortgage.
Thanks for the pics.

Recoil is definitely there, but certainly not unmanageable. Enough to mark my hand with the hammer spur without a glove. I am shooting a 411gr boolit right at 1000fps. Probably upper 30000 psi loads.

I wish I had bought a Grover several years back when they were more affordable. I really need to acquire one! Heck while I am dreaming, make it a 45 :)

Whats the recipe?

Aaron

Lefty,

The recipe is a Mihec 476-640 that weighs 411 grs with my alloy. I am using 20.5 grs of WC297 in Hornady brass with a standard LP primer. I have not calibrated it with 296/110 against the WC297 yet because I ran out of the canister powders. But with other calibers the 297 has run slower by 1-1.5 grs, so I would expect this to be equivalent to 19-19.5 grs of 296/110. This was a starting point to get some chrono readings and I will play around this velocity, up or down a bit, looking for the accuracy point, but am happy with this velocity area.

BTW- I did try some 10B101 with the HP version of this boolit which weighs 386grs and got 915fps with 15 grs, 980fps with 16grs, and 1030fps with 17grs, which was lightly compressed.

Thanks

Aaron

I love my Grover. I am the second owner and have the letters from the original owner corresponding with Bill and even two framed pictures Bill sent to the originall owner. I would hate to think what it would cost to duplicate one today given all the small custom nuances that it has. I was lucky, I gave $1100 for it 6-8 years ago at a local gunshow. Guess nobody could figure out why he was asking so much for a "Ruger"

I know this may comparing apples to oranges but I'm running 20.0 and 21.0 gr of H110 under an Accurate 48-420S 420gr bool it I cast. Don't have any chrono readings yet but the accuracy is definitely there! But as mention before its Out of a stock 9 1/2" SRH

Arron: at $1100 you stole that gun! I have that much in my SBH Bisley in .44 with the cost of the gun, shortening the barrel and adding the Bowen and Weigand sights.

You got something real special for the same money.

Cool guns!

I was pulling this thread for Dougrader to find it and see I missed responding to some comments, sorry about that.

Randy, you are rigbt about my Grover. Cycling the action is definitely one of the more pleasurable things in life!

Thanks all for the comments on the little 480, it is a sweet little packin' pistol.

I have the BFR in 500 but that gun weighs about 4lbs.
I imagine this little firebreather is brutal, love it!

Have you had the internals checked on your Grover for hardness? Seems everyone over on www.singleactions.proboards.com sends theirs to Harton for a checkup.

Also, have you filled out the survey by Cubrock? He is doing a book on them.

Here is his email

I have not had it checked, but I have also shot it enough that if it was going to have any problems I would have already had them. Also, it is one of Bill's early guns, number 38. I believe John Taffin has number 44.

Interestingly, Zac was here today to pick up some lead and told me about Cubrock's research. I am going to jump over there in a bit to check it out.

I got the Grover from the original owner who also gave me many articles, hand written letter from Bill, and two framed pictures of a Grover that Bill sent him. Pretty cool!

God that thing is cool!! Only thing id change arron is the grips. That thing is screaming for a set of daul sheep or ivory grips or even some english walnuts!! Id send it off to dustin and let him work his majic! With a set of grips youd have what is in my opinon the coolest fivegun in the country!

Lloyd, thanks I appreciate that! I agree with your grip assessment. It will get new grips, and I would love to do ivory, but, it will likely get Grashorn's elk stags. He does very nice work and I can drive the revolver to him and he will do it the same day for me.

Pats a real nice guy and does some fine work. Ive got a half a dozen sets of his elk stags. I was skeptical about the first pair as i had a couple sets of elk stag in the past that were real pourous and didnt hold up. One was just like a spounge. It pulled the grip screw right though. I havent had that problem with pats grips. What i do do when i order them though is ask for grips with very little bark. To be honest i like them with no bark. They look almost like aged ivory when theres no bark and there a much more durable grip that way. If you EVER want to get your money back out of that gun id sure be the first in line. YOU STOLE THAT THING!!!

Aaron

I like no bark on the elk stags too for the same reason. That is why the Grover and 500 JRH has none. The JRH ended up with a little dark graininess and I ended up liking it even thouvh I was wanting the aged ivory look. You can be first in line, but I certainly hope life is not so cruel that I would need to part with it.

Aaron, I apologize for not coming back to check on these pictures. I still say the 480 Bisley shorty is stunning. What a beaut. A Perfect Packin Pistol with some real power.

I have a Lispeys 44 Special Bisley flat top, but really like it "as is." Will have to find another just for a conversion like this. What great "little" pistol.

What frame is the 500 JRH built on?

The 500 started life as a New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt.
Sounds like Zac has a mjd- size 480 in the works...

The pictures do raise my blood pressure slightly. They are nice. I have dibbs on being second in line. However I do not want life to deal you a hand that forces a sale!

No sale here. Life's good I have a new job, what a great boss! Matter fact cousin to this 1 should be showing up anytime. It is a old model single 6 converted 40 Smith and Wesson. it will have a short octagon barrel, color case hardened , and brass birds head grip. Should be really cool! I will post pictures of it when it shows.
