Just picked up an Ideal 308 291 2 holer and can't find any info on it anywhere. Anybody know anything about it? Looks like about a 180 gr RN. What top punch should I get?

Doug is correct.
It is a great booit designed for the 30-30.
Use the Lyman 291 top punch.....dale

Although the mold number is 308291 instead of the modern designation of 311291, don't expect it to throw a 308 " cast bullet. Most likely, your bullets will run about .312" or more. The old IDEAL's were known to throw bullets a bit on the large side of things ( which in my opinion is good )

Yours should weigh between 170 and 175 grs. depending on your alloy.

The 311291 is over 100 years in production and is still a top seller. Expect extremely good accuracy from your 308291.

I have a ventless, single cavity version that drops in the .313" range. Bolt or lever gun, all my .30 caliber rifles love it. I love it, because the boolit actually jumps out, as if the cavity were spring loaded.

It is a bore riding design, and depending on your particular gun, the bore riding section might be small. I have a Savage 219 single shot with a large bore, and my Lyman 311291's shot good but not great in it. Years back, we did a group buy with LEE for this design, and the molds came in with fat nose sections that fit my Savage perfectly, and cut my groups by more than 1/2.

The rifles I plan on shooting CBs from will be a M-1 and a 1903 or 03A3, and possibly a M-1A in the future. Anybody used this bullet in the old battle rifles?

One of my .30 caliber rifles that loves that boolit is an '03-A3.

I'm still in the devolopement stage, with it, in the K-31's.

Shoots well in my sporterized 1903. 20 grains of 2400 gives me better groups than I get with factory ammo. This is a mild load that won't function the action on a semi-auto, but for fun plinking, it is perfect.

shootnstarz :

Cast a few and tell us what the dimensions are on the drive bands and the nose.

The nose being the diameter just ahead of the forward most band?

Also the Lyman 311291 says to use the #465 top punch, a #291 was recommended in a previous reply. Does it matter which?
