I have a friend who can get me some lead/bismuth alloy used to quench steel. has anyone used this or heard of it being used for bullets. i know they use it for nontox shot. i know pure bismuth is very brittle but a alloy might just work. i can get alot of it for nothing just thought id ask!

Well, a good way to know would be to get some and test it yourself. A better way to know would be to have more than one person doing the same tests. I'm willing to help, send me 50lbs of the alloy, and I will let you know how it works out. :)

A little bismuth in an alloy will help reduce srinkage in the cast boolit. At least that is what a rotometals person told me. You do not need very much to work, about 2 to 4 % is all.

I've used some that was about 1/2 bismuth. Casts nice and shoots fine.

Boolits are a little on the dull side. Almost look frosted but they're really just dull.

Well the Bismuth help with the hardness of the lead mix?

Guys,

4 or 5 years ago I did some testing with bismuth/lead alloys to see if they would make for a dense alloy that knocked steel over well when shooting BPCR silhouette. The bismuth did not offer any advantage over the much cheaper tin.

Will the Bismuth help with the hardness of the lead mix? I did some hardness tests on aged bismuth ingots that were gifted to me. They were Bhn 19.6 and Bhn 23.4 :holysheep
Yes, they will help hardness!

Save it for your 22 boolits using 14-16 twist guns because of the added weight it provides. Don't waste it for larger calibers unless twist is too slow for that specific gun. Of course, using antimony is much, much cheaper and easier to get as well just for hardening. ... felix

i can get alot of it for nothing

It's certainly priced right!!!! I'd get all I could while it is available. The price concern some of the guys are mentioning, does not apply in this case, so why not? It may not last long at that price, Best jump in quick.
