That would be my only concern, that they were melted with zinc in the mix.

I'm not a boat guy, but I understand that keel weights and anchors are often cast with anything that will melt in the temperature range of lead alloys and zinc, and may contain a little bit of most anything that was handy.

Thats true, my buddies dive and sail, they gave me old dive weights and some ballast from a trashed sailboat, both had zinc in it.

What is the best(cheapest) way to detect zinc in the anchor?

Well, $#!+, now you tell me. I've got 37# of pure lead tied up in kick-boat anchors (cast in cans like the pics) and no zinc ww left on the place.
Gonna have to start over...

Cheapest way was a phone call, made of only lead,no zinc!

Lets hope so, many of the boat/racer/sinker guys just don't know about zinc, and run the pot hot enough to melt them.

Hi,
I know a few guys running sailboats that have poured keels before. What I picked up out of the conversation is that they did not flux and skimmed the "junk" of the top which was probably the tin!

I would think small coffee can lead anchors were made from the cheapest and easiest obtained lead, which would be wheel weights!

Pour some Muriatic acid on them, if they bubble there is zinc there. Get it from the pool section of the hardware store.

$4.00-5.00 for a gallon of it at Home Depot.

Try toilet bowl cleaner, works fine for acid test as the acid will do the job of bubbling in zinc.
