It's simply a check with a wider opening at the mouth that will slip over the base of a bullet that wasn't designed to accept a gas check. When the bullet is sized, the sizing die swages the check into the bearing surface of the bullet, which holds it in place. It works great, by the way.

Hope this helps.

could they be used in lee sizers?

monge,
I think Fred covered it pretty well.
I have put them on using Lee sizers. It has worked pretty well for me if the bullet can be put in base first instead of nose first. Doing it this way, sometimes the base will not be completely flat. When I run them through my Lyman 45 the bases come out completely flat.
Good luck, jmsj

could they be used in lee sizers?Yes they can the thinner .004 alum. cam material works best IMO using them the normal nose fist way with the thicker material like .008-.010 I had to size base first ,This was with 35 cal bullets.

Yes for straight walled cases just use checks upside down. Works great no squeezing.

A friend of mine ringed a chamber on his .45 Colt putting gas checks in upside down. There was evidently an air gap between the check and the base of the bullet, and the compressed air caused a visible ring in the chamber.

Hope this helps.

is there any chance that the aluminium is going to be harsh or abrasive on my bore?

monge: updside down checks (one of the suggestions) don't stay on the bullet in flight. There is nothing holding it on. Seating them rightside up, they get swaged onto the bullet bottom band.

Someone else suggested when using a Lee sizer, feed them base first. I get the best results by sizing and lubing on the lubrisizer, then swaging on the gas check using a Lee. Going in nose first keeps the bullet sqaure and is more consistent. I think it depends on the bullet, and caliber, how flat the nose it etc... so YMMV. In my case, it's all for 357 Magnums, and they like nose first into the Lee sizer, with a plain base gas check.

RG_86: I haven't seen plain base gas checks for sale. There are a couple of available gas check makers you can buy and then make your own. Pat Marlins is the best, IMHO. If you search here for him and his Checkmaker you'll find him. Great guy who designs and produces excellent products.

An alternative is the Necos P-WADS. For straight walled cartridges, they sit just below the bullet. There's info at http://www.neconos.com/shop/index.php?cat=16& scroll down and you'll see them.

Congrats on a good purchase. I use aluminum signs from Lowes and cut them into strip with a paper cutter. You'll have to experiment to get the width just right, but it's not hard and doesn't take long.

for my 35PB checkmaker I used aluminum cans. Worked great, but a double layer for .008 works the best. Amerimax has a flashing of that thickness, but it must be annealed for best results.

The signs I'm using are .010, FYI.
