Just thinking,

Red dot and unique are both popular and commonly used in 45acp.

Since green dot falls between these, it should also be a useful speed for 45acp, so I went looking for green dot loads for 45acp.

I found only 1 on alliant's web site, and only 1 more in wiljen's reloaders reference.

It seems to be almost forgotten.

Does anyone know why?

Is there some characteristic of green dot that doesn't work with 45 acp? Or did it just not "catch on" for pistol?

Does anyone have any green dot loads for 45acp?

Thanks

My favorite load for IPSC was 5.2 Red Dot behind a 200gr RCBS SWC. I have tried both Unique and Green Dot for some reason (and I'll admit to not working with it to intensely) GD seemed to leave a lot of unburned powder in the barrel. Even more so than the Unique loads.

GD is hard to burn and stub is right a barrel full of powder. Its even a little dirty in a 28in shotgun barrel. In a ACP you are going to have a clean up job if you use many
RD and unique are ok but for a 5gr charge the flake dont meter as well as a ball or tightgroup

A few years ago someone gave me 20 pounds of green dot. I've been using it in almost all my handgun loads. I'm not seeing the cleanup issue the other folks are talking about. But if I had to buy the powder I might use red dot or something else.

I'm shooting 5 grains of green dot behind a 230 grain.

4.5gr. Green Dot behind a Lee 230 TC in my 1911. It is dirty, but shoots great and I too have a bunch of Green Dot I need to use up.

Consider American Select. It falls between RD and GD, burns extremely clean and makes for tight little groups.

And the best part is that it is almost always overlooked by the handgun crowd looking for Bullseye, Unique, or 2400 or the trapshooter crowd looking for RedDot...

I bought a bunch for $10 a pound, and have fired probably 10,000 rounds for plates matches since. 5.3 grains with a 230 RN, for 850 fps. from a 5" 1911. If you keep the pressure reasonably normal, it burns OK. I clean this gun every 3-5,000 rounds, just oil in between. If you have it, use it. If you haven't bought it yet, there are probably better powders for the application.

I have a bunch loaded up with 5.1 grains and a 230 gr Lee TC microband bullet. It shoots well in my Government Model.

I used GD with .45 ACP 230gr both jacketed and home cast with the Lee mold. It definitely did work, but I was rather inexperienced in reloading at the time. So I can't really say one thing or another about it, other than I didn't notice any degradation of accuracy. I did get some leading, but I'm not sure why. I also used Green Dot in .44 Special, .32 ACP, 9mm, and .38 Spl.

I too use quite a bit of Green Dot for my handgun loads, everything from 38 Spl to 45 Colt. Works good in most all, better in some.
