I finally got around to shooting through my chronograph today. I am loading a 400 grain cast boolit over some 4198 and it is going about 1560 fps or so. Does that seem normal?

I have to load up a few more rounds as when I got home my gun fell over and broke the front site, so I had to go down to the local shop and get a new front sight and a rear peep. Now I have to go back out Saturday morning and sight in with the new sights.

Post us some targets to look at! Pictures are worth a thousand words! Somebody will be along shortly to verify your velocity concerns!;)

If that is a 45/70 than you can get some more out of it. Only if your shoulder holds up.

If not a 45/70 - I don't have a clue!

Yes 45-70 and I found that 36 grains is the most accurate load. At 50 yards it does quite well. Know that I have put a Williams Peep sight and a high Viz front sight on it I hope to do a little better and hit 100 yards. I was using a 6" shoot and see target yesterday. Saturday morning I will use a 100 yard target with the shoot and see. I did not take pictures or keep the targets from yesterday but if you look at this thread there are pictures from the load development. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=139891

You are running 1560 FPS - no real need to go any higher unless you want a little flatter trajectory. My hunting load with a 430 Cast and 4198 is running 1700 FPS. I have more powder room and according to quick load I can go to about 1800. I don't think my shoulder can take too many of those at a time!

I am having a hard time thinking I need to go faster, that's a big hunk of lead to get moving. I might be able to find some thing with a different powder, but as far as 4198 goes, that's it. The pattern really opens up past 36 grains.

My Guide Gun has a sweet spot thereabouts w/ RX7, .5gr hotter and the eyepiece plays havoc with my eyeglasses. :holysheep I can't think of a reason to go hotter, several good reasons not to.

Reloader7 in about a 48 gr. with a 350 gr. FP works great for me. I've taken them up to 52gr., but those really set you on your heels. ;)

My gr RD boolit gets pushed off the edge by 46 grs of RX7, can't figure out why 4198 didn't work for me. I think it's a better powder for that cartridge @ that velocity.

Well I got back out today with the new peep sights and was able to shoot at 100 yards. I am quite happy with my load and the accuracy difference that peep sights made.

Good to hear, there's something about peeps. Rainy mess around here today, glad to hear someone got out and enjoyed the day.

Yup it was a very nice day, this also meant that the range was pretty busy.
