I work at an Ace Hardware and can buy 5lb pure lead ingots and 1lb 50/50 solder at cost. What would be a good ratio mix for general handgun use? I shoot a lot of 38SP, 45ACP and mid range 44Mag. Thanks...

30-1 or 20-1 for low and mid range loads, 40-1 for 700 - 850 fps loads in the .38 SPL. For magnum loads in the 44 go with 16-1 (that's what Elmer did).

What prices are you able to get for both of those?

Hmpf. My brother owns a hardware store; never thought of asking him about this! I'm curious to know your cost too! -Brad

Sorry guys, I would only be able to divulge the retail prices...company policy. Don't want to get sideways with my employer.

Good friend of mine is a Trustworthy hardware dealer, I'll have to try and remember to ask him how much things like bar lead, solder, etc would cost.
I bet even at wholesale it would be higher than buying old metal at a scrap yard.

I can't find lead at my local ace hardware. How do you get it from there?

$15 for 5 lbs of pure lead is the retail price.

You might be able to get a better price here on the forum. It usually goes for about $1 per pound delivered.
