View Full Version : Quick lead source question

While removing wheelweights from wrecks at the local junk yard, I scored some negative terminal connectors that are also lead. Are there any hazards with using these? I plan on soaking in a baking soda bath before I melt them down if there is any reason to worry about acid residue.

Not problems. Rinse and stay upwind!

No problems, they are usually pure.

I have melted many of them
I have never rinsed them. If they have that white "bloom" on them I brush it off.
They usually are still attached to the battery post with the battery cable and insulation attached. The battery post will melt as will the terminal. You will be left with some copper wire and the steel bolt to skim off the top. The insulation will smell really bad.

DO NOT do this indoors.

I scored the GOOD ones, on most of them I was able to remove the wires but a few had the wires cast in. I won't be doing any smelting/casting inside so no worries there.

Time to go back and get the rest of those connectors, thanks for the info.
