After being gone for an extended period of time my rifle is finally back to the house!
Bought it back in August of last year and had it shipped to Turnbull Restoration for some work. Had it color case hardened, rechambered to 45-90 and the rebounding hammer and tang safety removed.

Got it home for a short period of time and put 10 rounds through it.
Them crescent butt plates are pure hell on me!
So off to Macon Gunstocks.

Choose my stock blank and the work started.
Had it checkered in the period correct Winchester "H" pattern at 22lpi's.
Had two butt pads done up for it. One for show and one for the field which it is wearing.

Been doing a lot of casting of 350gr and 400gr boolits for it the last couple of days.
Going to be headed to the range soon!!!!

Oh My!.............

I have the 1886 in Take Down that I'd like to do the exact same thing.

Greetings
Have not bought a Macon stock but I can attest to the shotgun butte style being user friendly. Have a light weight 1886 (jap) that is far more pleasent to shoot in summer clothing than the cresent butte 86 that weights near 2 pounds more.

That is a very nice looking rifle. Maybe after I get all of my kids raised and out of the house I will be able to afford to do something like that. I have 11 more years to go at the least.

Best wishes,

Joe

That stock design looks about perfect for that rifle. Nice piece of wood too. Even when Winchester produced custom leavers I bet you couldn't get anything nicer.

Tom! Did your rifle start off chambered in .348?? I have a (Japanese) Browning Mod 71 in .348 that I want to turn into a .45-70 for my Daughter "Bonny Kate". She has been shooting my 1886 in SASS long range and in any position other than off hand, she really gets beaten' up by that crescent but plate! I was looking at Mc Gowen to do the work ~ ~~ ~ but maybe Turnbull is the way to go???

Thanks.........Ralph
