Is there a way to find out how many model 99s were chambered in 284 Win?

Good question, worth a bump. Looks like only a few 99 models chambered the 284 and only for a limited time so the answer is likely to be not very many.
How's it shoot?

No way to tell exactly how many were made in any specific caliber. .284 is definitely one of the rare ones though.

I am going on what I was told 20 years ago, but I was told there was less than 1500 made in the 284 win. I sold mine, I regret it now, but at the time I was so mad, because it had just shaken apart the 5th scope on it. I have never seen a rifle so violent on scopes. The one that lasted the longest was an old K 6 weaver. The $700 Leupold I put on it didn't last a box of shells. I have never had a gun that had so violent a recoil. With a single round fired out of it, you could see which direction the screws were turned in the butt plate by looking at your shoulder, and that was through a Tshirt, flannel shirt, and wind breaker jacket. Nothing like having the Indian head semi embossed on your shoulder. I only shot it 5 times a week, couldn't take it more than that. That is why I got rid of it, I got tired of having to replace and rezero new scopes. It did shoot good while the scope held up.

Best wishes,

Joe

Given the # of 99's in 284 W that I've owned,I think 1500 total prod. is low.. and I've seen at least 20x as many 99's in that caliber for sale as the Sako Actioned Belg.Brownings in that caliber, where a source show 211 rifles made in all grades.. The 99F in 284 is for certain a nasty recoiler, but the same model in 358 with the old 250 gr factory load is mutiples worse.. Onceabull

TX,

It's picky. I had problems at first cause the buttstock was loose. So I glass bed it. The only brass I had was new and like most 99s I have owned it liked fireformed to it's own chamber and the die adjusted to minimum headspace. After that I have gotten sub moa with barnes txs 140 gr. I didn't use the chrono but would estimate somewhere around 2800 -2850. I would have to go look up the load but remember that it was well short of the majical 3000 in the books. But give me tight groups over another 150 fps anyday.

Boer,

I would rather do benchwork with the 284 in my 99 than full loads in my 348 anyday. model 95 in 405 win with steel butt plate X2. The 284 in my 99 is a pussycat compared to those two levers. But then again they don't have scopes.

As to how many they made...all I know is that I looked a long time to find one. The model 71 is considered rare and they made nearly 50k of them.

ammohead, I have a sharps Cavalry Carbine in a 45-70, and with 70 grains of the holy black behind a 405 gr cast boolit that rifle doesn't kick as hard as that 99F 284. I have been shooting the big magnums with full power loads, like 85.5 grs of AA3100 on a 165 gr Sierra Game King, yes I know that is over a max load but it shoots good in my gun, and I have never been kicked like that 284 kicked me. I have been kicked 10 ft by horses and mules and it hurt less than that gun.

Best wishes,

Joe

If you can get your mitts on one of these you will find(at least I did) that the extra weight and high comb really does take a big bite out of the recoil...Problem is, those are VERY RARE is 284,or 358..I have yet to find one for sale in 358,and the only 284 I've seen wasn't for sale then, and still isn't.(.I check back with the owner fttt ) Onceabull

Huh, mine recoils just like a 8lb rifle shooting 140 gr bullets at 2850 fps, go figure. Never been kicked by a mule or a horse....took one to the heart from a redhead named Libby once. Does that count? If they all hurt like that I would take up archery!

Last year I finally got my first 99 in 284 and it is a clip model. I don't find the recoil to be too bad , but I have been shooting a 358 F model for more than 30 years. I learned early on to use 200 grain bullets as the 250s kick the snot out of you. I do wish my 284 was an F model but I have never seen one.

If the F is a rotary mag...then that is what I have. Have never owned a removable mag 99. Just don't seem right.
