Can anyone tell me what this is for? It's been sitting in my parts box forever. Some kind of top rail or sight mount? There are no markings on it what so ever.

Just a guess. Could it be a cartridge guide for a Model 94 Winchester? They usually came in pairs, though. I have no idea of the scale of the part; am guessing by the length and thinness and the two screws towards the ends.

It's 4.805" long on the top, 4.475" long on the botom. .220" wide at the top. half way down then angles out to be .0270" wide on the bottom. It's .125" thick except for the top overhang is .055" thick. screws are centered .605" from top edge.

looks almost like the bolt guide rail on a marlin 60

it was in my grandfathers part box. i got them when he passed. he never had a marlin or any type of lever action. was into target shooting. he had high standards, winchester m52, s&w 52, NM 45's, etc.

marlin 60 is a semi auto .22 rifle.

it could be the bolt rail for any gun really.

I once dismantled my metal lathe for cleaning and adjustments. Both the Cross-Slide and the Compound-Slide had a length of metal that resembled your "Mystery Parts."

It's like the shim that tightens up the Cross-Slide or Compound Slide.

I can't think of the technical name of these parts right now but, I was wondering; by any chance, did your grandfather own an metal working machinery?

Pops didn't own any semi-auto rifles. all bolt or rolling block. No metal working machinery either. Problem is that when he passed, we split up his collection between my dad and his sister, so it could be a gun they have.

The lathe parts above are called "gibes" I believe.

Gib. Pronounced with a hard "g", and spelt without the "e". Scraped and fitted many of 'em early in my career.

They don't look like gibs to me . . . .

I agree that it looks like some sort of universal scope rail or sight rail.

Most of the Gibs I have seen were parallelograms.
Can you take a photo of the end of it?

Thank you for the correction. Spelling was my worst subject in school and that was over half a century ago.
