I last used lyman checks over 35 years ago.I was trying to use them on a lee 113 flt pt or 120 rn for a 30 carbine, they would not stay on the bullet so I have not used them since. Has lyman done anything to make these work??? Cabels owes me some $ and lyman checks are all they list, would prefer hornady

I speak only for myself, as I do not know if what I have experienced over the past two (2) years is typical or atypical of their product: : I have given-up on Lyman checks. On my .30/30, .270, and .45/70 they all seem to do the same thing: They fall-off.

You could always try a drop of super glue and then run through the sizer. :)

Annealing them helps too. It takes the spring back out of them. I've only used them in 7mm and never had a problem with them falling off...Ray

Hello folks,
I am about to purchase a 1895 Winchester lever gun in 30-40 Krag that was put together in 1896. I have seen and handeled it for my friend to be sure it was in shootable condition and it looks almost new inside and out. It is for Cowboy Action Shooting competition so only lead bullets can be used but gas checks are legal. The last time I fit gas checks to the base of a bullet was in 1966 for my Remington Enfield 30-06. Lyman was the only check I could find and as I recall they are made to fall off as soon as they leave the rifle much like the paper from patched bullets. The process was to find where they were flying off down range as you made your way to the target. This new aquisition has brought back great memories with my father's teachings. I started reloading in 1951 at ten and by the time I was twelve was unsupervised while loading for Dad's 1903-A3 and 1917 S&W .455 Webley revolver. Hunting bullets were Sierra for my father's 03-A3 as well as the .7x57 Mouser he let me use for hunting at 13. Money was tight so all the practice was with gas checked bullets poured from a lead pot on the gas stove with a hand ladel. All done on windy days with the front and back door open. I will be using both available commercial gas checks from MidwayUSA.com to see which will be most consistant for 200 yards with the same Lyman 311299 200grain mold we used 60 years back. I will post the results. Good shootn my friends. LT
