I need some recipes for light loads using .358 cast 158 gr swcs. My book shows about 10 grs. of Unique. Can I use 7 or 8 grns. and be safe. Fixing these for some small girls.

Thanks,
Vince

Yup, you can, or you can use even lower loads with faster powders. I will TRY to remember to look up some of the old data when I get out to the barn today. (casting room)

I used to shoot mine with the Lyman 358311 and 8 grains on Red Dot, but I think a similar charge of Unique would work well too. Gotta love the .35 Remington, t sure is a sweetie to load for and shoot.

With unique/red dot/bullseye/700X/green dot you can safely go as slow as you want .... as long as they ALL make it out the end of the barrel...that could be bad. I have went stupid super uuuber slow in the 30/30 and stuck one in the bore. That is no big deal as long as you realize it happened. :oops:

My favorite no doubt "limbo load" for the 35rem is 6gr unique and a soft cast tumblelubed SWC.

I've done a bit of testing with PB'd pistol bullets in my 35 Rem (M91 Argie rebarreled with Shilen 26") and have found accuracy really isn't all that great above 1160 fps with a couple bullets and most give best accuracy in the 800 - 1050 fps range. I found Bullseye to be the best powder for such loads. I cast them fairly soft and size all .358 - .360 depending on "drop" size and lube with a soft Lube such as javelina or LLA.

My favorites loads are;

Lee 356-120-TC over 5 gr BE for 1160 fps
Lyman 358477 over 3.5 gr BE for 910 fps
Speer or Honady swaged WCs or SWCs over 3 gr Bullseye for 830 fps

Accuracy is excellent to 200 yards with the TC and SWCs, 75 yards or so with the WCs which also need to be single fed.

Vince, I thought I had some light loads stashed someplace, but I'll be hanged if I can find them. Probably put it all in a folder I hid someplace so I wouldn't lose it! Sorry.

Thanks to all for your replies. I am going to try the 6 gr. of Unique and see if they will work. A friend has a couple of girls (8-10) and they like to shoot. Trying to make them some loads that won't make them gunshy. If anyone else has any loads, I will listen.

Thanks again,
Vince
