Are old-skool tin ceiling tiles actually made of tin?

My mother paints on them - beautiful floral stuff in oils - so she's always got an eye out for a deal. She's pretty picky because she needs a flat center section for her purposes, but to me it all melts the same.

Might need her to start keepin' an eye out for the middle child.

What say ye?

Doubtful. I would expect them to be steel.

I'm not certain but I would really think they were made of "Terne" metal. Black iron sheet with an extremely thin coat of Lead/Tin alloy coating (to help if they were soldered together). I cleaned many of them in commercial establishments long ago and far away.

Most i've seen are steel with galvanized(zinc) coating. mixed steel is $.09 # at local junkyard. lead is $.50 retail. so 5.5# of steel will get you 1# of lead. I often make that deal. 10
