Reading Fryxell's book he mentioned the 431244. I was wondering when Lyman (Ideal?) changed to the 429244 designation and why? Maybe that explains why my new mould cast so small.

Then there're the cases of 308 being changed to 311, and 454 being changed to 452.

The only thing that has remained constant is Lyman's unrelenting insistance that their moulds drop correctly sized boolits only when cast of their #2 alloy.

Yeah, there's no rhyme or reason to Lyman's number changing.

At one time, their 308s all went to 311s. Duh! Most of the 308s over the years had been 311s anyway. Then, they got complaints that we expected the 429s to cast oversize so they went to 431 and we're still getting .429" moulds to this day. Finally, it got to be a pain to catalog so they went back to 429.

Then, there's the old 42498 and I've seen several. I've also seen 42798s and 42998s and every one casts small.

Guess it depend on the clerk working that day and what he liked./beagle

From the few examples I have seen only the numbers were changed, not the diameters.

Precisely and that's the amazing part. Why go to that trouble and not change anything in the way of diameter. Do they think casters are stupid?/beagle

i think it was easier to change the molds designation, than it was to buy a new cherry.
no sense telling people that the former 431 is now a smaller version and might only make 429.
let's call it a 429 and be done with it.

I think maybe the 427s & 428s were designed for the 44-40. Most of those slugged 427 or 428 even though the throats were bigger.

I have both molds, they cast about the same diameter, about .430 or so.
