Marlin with a .4515 bore and a Ruger with a .4507 bore / .4525 Throats, I have been using .452 cast. I also have a Taurus that has .454 Throats and a .4522 Bore that I shoot .454 cast in.

Here's my question, can I just use .454's in everything. I mean how much larger than actual bore diameter can you go. In the guns shooting 452's I tried a few .454's and lost about 50fps velocity which is understandable. I only tried a couple.

It would be a lot more simplified and easier.

How about leading? I have heard that if a Boolit is to large it creates a cone on the base as it travels through the Barrel, the outside edges of the cone will melt. As it rotates this will deposit lead in the barrel.

Your thoughts?

Sure you can use .454 in all.

Where some get into trouble is having small throats that size the boolit below bore diameter.

As long as the loaded rounds will chamber, you're good to go.

What's the rule .003, .004, just how much larger can you go over bore size?

From most experts bore plus .002.

I've never witnessed any leading by using a grossly oversize boolit but have seen a drop in accuracy due to a distorted base.

What he said. I have a 357 mag rifle, that depending on the boolit design, likes them any where from 358 to 362 dia. The funny part is that the bore slugs out at 357. In this particular rifle the shorter the boolit, or the more tapered the nose is the larger dia boolits shoot better. They only way you will find out for sure is to try the larger ones and see how they shoot.

Best wishes,

Joe

Try the bigger bullets in the Ruger and Marlin. It doesn't matter what we say, they will tell you all you need to know. Be sure to try loads in the pressure/velocity ranges you generally run. Bullet size preference could change with different loads. Chances are all will be fine.

why not try the 452's in the taurus?
if that was a fail allready then go with the 454 in the others.

.452's in the Taurus lead pretty bad.

From most experts bore plus .002.

Those 'experts' are wrong.

The limit, as found by many on this board is what will chamber.

For example, I have a Smith six gun with .455 throats, .452 bore. A Winchester 94 that just barely goes .451 in the bore.

I shoot boolits sized .457 in both. Work wonderfully, very accurate and zero leading in both guns.

If the boolit is large enough that it won't fit in the chamber, it's too big. Otherwise . . .
