Got a box of 50 .441 bullets from Buffalo Arms today...500 gr

Pure lead..Cupped base...Question..How much should I leave for the
tail end? Gonna try my hand at this lost art...:holysheep

Oh...just enough so you can still see the center of the dark area in the middle of the cupped bases below!

I would leave the patch a little long and twist the excess and push it into the cup, but not to long that it is piled up more then the depth of the cup.
This is what the cup base is designed for, to tug the twisted tail into.
If the cup is to deep, deeper then what the excess tail will fill the card wad with the lube pushing it will get pushed into the cup and this will pull the wad edges away form the bore wall and let the lube wad bypass the card and it will stick to the base of the bullet and will ride down range with the bullet and cause those flyer's.
If you use a cup base bullet leave a little tail to get pushed into the cup. If you use a flat based bullet just fold the patch over the base slightly leaving a lead dot showing in the center.
