At the gun show yesterday, there was an old winchester lever rifle (long barrel) octagun barrel in 30 wcf caliber. What models could it have been. It appeared in fair shape mechanically, patina covering all the metal, but no rust or pitting.

Long Octagon barrel seems 73ish to me.

Probably an 1894 or maybe a 64. Straight stock would be 1894, pistol grip stock, short mag tube would be 64.

It is a Model 1894. What was the gun show asking price? They are nice rifles. Killed my deer this year with one.

It was straight grip, and the asking price was 700. It had a big chip out of the stock.

half mag tube?
i have seen 64's with 30" long octagon bbls and 94's with half and half's.
you usta could order pretty much what you wanted from winchester.

Man I would love to have one of those. I'd agreed that it's likely a 1894. I cowboyed with a fella had one with a 26" octagon barrel and it was a shooter.

all my books say 64's had round barrels and 5 shot mags. if it had a oct barrel it was a 94. 94's could be ordered with pistol grip stocks oct round and part round barrels. rifles has 26" barrels as standard. but could be ordered with up to 32" barrels.

64's could be ordered 2 ways standard had smooth stocks and the deluex had checkering. the forearms on 64's were wider then a 94. plus they had eyes for a sling.

Well it must have been a 94 by everyones description, I should have looked it over more.
The guy is a local and the same gun was at the last sho, so if it didn't sell will probably be at the next one too. If it is I will check it out a little better, maybe even make him an offer and see if he is tired of taking it to shows. lol

Got 1 of those old long barreled `94`s myself, and yes it is still a shooter - curved butt plate or not! As to the chip out of the stock in question, it probably is at the stock toe by the butt plate. Winchester used straight grain walnut mostly and people would set a gun down too hard sometimes and this spot would break off. I learned this little fact from an factory rep. from Winchester back in the early `60`s at our store.Robert

That is exactly where the chip is at and it is rather large. It wouldn't affect the function, but sure hurts the looks.
All the metal has a pretty even patina, it just looks old. I actually like the way it looks, but it probably wouldn't look right with a new stock.

At the last show the guy had a nice old 99 savage, but it had a brand new shiny barrel on it that put me off.
