I am building a Frankenstien on a Model 70 Push myself. I have read they have very long throats and the big ones work best, 405 and up. I am very interested in any experience that chimes in. Gtek

My one run in with a 458 was a rifle loaned by a friend. It was a Ruger 77 & beautiful. He also gave me a few boxes of handloads using one of the big Lyman 500 grain bullets. I shot the rifle in my backyard while living in Dry Creek. Targets were white paper plates. It was simple to see after several rounds the load was making perfect keyholes. That was my one & only time with the 458.

I sometimes shoot a .458 Win Mag with Lee 500 gr. cast boolets, but lately with 550 gr. cast from a group buy here. I use around 54 gr. of IMR 4064. I am getting good accuracy offhand but it is not something I want to shoot from the bench to really dial in.

I'm on my second .458 The missing/stolen one was an old red pad Ruger #1 that shot like a target rifle with a variety of loads; cast bullets (commercially cast) of a variety of weights, down to 340gr or so. If you run across serial #132-20519, with or without the Leupold M8-6x on it, I and the Dallas PD would love to see it again......

My current .458 is Winchester Model 70 CRF Super Express, a really nice handling and not overweight big bore. Took a long time to find a decent load; it will shoot the SAECO 745 (close to 535 gr from my mold with my alloy) into around 2" at 100 yards, 5 shots. Can't find much difference between SR4759 and XMP 5744, both at about 1600 fps. Did all the cast load testing from a solid bench with PAST pad, Leupold 6.5-20, and the best technique I could muster, so I'm confident in the results. Bullet is seated as long as the unaltered magazine will accept, so grease grooves are uncovered (hey, it's a plinker!). I modified the factory "bedding"--and I use the term loosely--and lightened up the trigger. It now wears a Leupold 3x, and I amuse myself busting rocks with it.

I've had good luck with Lee's 500gr gas checked boolit with a stout load of Varget in my .458 Lott as my "plinking" load. I use about 5 grains more of the same powder for my serious load with either the Woodleigh or Hornady 500gr solids or soft points.

POA/POI for those loads is within a inch of each other at 50 yards but the hit to my wallet is considerably less with the boolit. :)
