MiHec brass 4 cavity solid - 22 Nato
This is a sign-up thread for a new design........ specifically a heavy cast boolit for the 5.56mm Nato fast twist rifles. It also fits and shoots well in Mini-14s. This boolit is a gas check design made to fit AR mags. It casts out slightly above 0.226" and sizes easily to that diameter. Ready to load weight is 64.8 gr. It has NOT fit some of the commercial 223 chambers we've tried it in, but it does fit the Wylde chamber as tested by two members, the CZ 527 and the Browning A-bolt. There are trial molds in the USA for this now and some of us are trying it out. To date the best load has gotten 1.5 MOA at 100 yds out of a 7 twist AR barrel in the lower 2100 fps range Edit: (1.175" 5 shot group at 100 yds. on 4/26/12 by Hamish in a DPMS 16" 9 twist barrel, Velocity 2443 fps Avg.) . Mihec is going to cut a four cavity mold on two cavity blocks much like BRP did on his 22 and 6mm molds for this. Price is $90 + $15 shipping Please give your e-mail address and the number of molds you want.

I'm still on the fence about this one. It looks like this one will not chamber in my DPMS M4 with out seating the gas check below the neck. I've already got the 225 70 from Swede. Just got it yesterday and have yet to check it out in my chamber. I's got a long 218 nose so I hope it works. I'll try it in the Encore next. This buy will run a while so I've got time.

Contact DPMS and ask them what chamber you have. If it's a Nato chamber, then your good to go.

I haven't been involved in a MiHec GB before. Is there any sort of delivery window? How is payment taken care of. Thanks.

The buy remains open, and you can order upto the time the buy closes. There is usually about a weeks notice till close date. Then Miha builds molds. When ready to ship he will sent invoice via Paypal, when you pay, he ships. Usually takes about a week to receive. This buy having just started out I'm guessing that it'll be open for 5-6 months, unless things get moving faster if Miha quits his fulltime daytime job. Some molds close earlier and I think there have been some open longer then that.

I shot some samples of this boolit yesterday at 45 2.1s house. It shot a 4 shot, inch and a quarter group out of my C/Z 527 american. It was windy and I think it would have done better if I would have been steadier. Nose was imprinted good and chambered fine. Distance was 100 yards and velocity was aprox 2200 fps. I was happy.

Thanks!

Most anything can be tumble lubed...............applying the tumble lube, adding a gas check, then sizing little boolits is messy IMO though. Useing a lubrisizer is much easier and cleaner. There are only three molds in the country right now and none of use tumble lube.

No, there is not. Its made to fit a Nato chamber and seat to the base of the neck while fitting the AR magazine. The only rifle it hasn't fit in testing is a Winchester M 70 target rifle (a nose sizer was made for that one and it shot very well).

Im in vparra559 diegotali2 at yahoo dot com 1 mold. Can they be made into hollow point molds. Will pay extra. Thanks

The molds cavities are too close together (that sucker is heavy in normal 4 cavity blocks) besides the nose is much too small for the normal cramer system to be any depth. The only way is the old normal pin type HP set-up.

Took a little road trip today to 45 2.1's little corner of heaven and learned a couple of things.

His load, his COL, my 16" 1-9 DPMS bull barrel 5.56; 1.175 for 5 shots at 100 yards.

" ", my .223 Contender rifle, around two inches, but, I had to crush fit them.

With more attention paid to nominal powder load and proper seating I have no doubt that this boolit will shoot sub 1moa. This ones a winner fella's.

Jailer
05-25-2012, 07:00 PM
Brass molds like to be run hot. Pre heat at a slightly higher temperature and keep your casting pace brisk and you should be fine. If the mold gets too cool, leave a bigger sprue puddle to add heat. If that doesn't work add a little temp to your melt.

Only add heat to the melt if nothing else works. A too hot melt tends to cause finning which can cause lead buildup on the face of the mold.

Anybody else get a mold that's casting oversize? Mine are dropping consistently at .230 and I can't get a gas check to seat on it to save my life.

No finning and not a bit of light shining through the mold either so that's not the problem. No flashing on the base either so that's not causing them to not seat.

I'm stumped.

Folks-
I've got reports of oversize castings. These weren't supposed to cast over 0.227". The original test molds thru boolits at 0.2265" for me. Miha has asked me to confirm if my GB mold (the same one as yours, not the original test mold) does the same as yours. I will try to do that tomorrow.... early as its quite hot here. Lets see what happens then.

I'm in the same boat. My base where the gas check is supposed to go is about 217-218. I can't fit the gas checks I have either. They are about 213-214.

I'm using 10-1 WW to Lino. Hardness is at 23-24.

Haven't tried seating the gas check on with my Lyman 4500, still waiting for a sizer.

The mold worked great, I didn't have any problems with my casting this morning.

A class act................Thank You Miha.
My results: Normal 50% WW/50% pure alloy, 0.229" to 0.230" as cast band diameters just after cooling, 0.216" GC shank.
My conclusion: This is about 3 to 3.5 thousandths over spec. If the as cast band diameter was 0.226" and not over 0.2265", the GC shank would be in spec. When your working with electronic controls, this happens on rare occasions. Glitches are hair pulling events...... I can atest that the test molds were in spec and worked fine.

Drat - drat - drat - I have not managed to get my casting setup yet - so no way to test how well it drops the bullets.

Deep breath - it will be a few more months before I can pick up the missing hardware to give this mould a test run. For now I will leave it sitting pretty in the nice box I received.

Temp sensor, hot plate, re-sizer, handles, work bench, lead hardness tester, and alloys to mix with the pure lead I have.

Could it be realistic to send the old blocks (in volume) down to Accurate or NOE for a bigger "caliber" group buy? Of course, it would depend on the number of units to offset the "cost" of tweaking the already-set-up CNC block dimensions on-hand. ... felix

I got my replacement today.

Can't wait for others to post their results, I cast with the new mold today.

Gator Gas Checks fit perfect on my castings. My bases are out of round by .003 ( .213-.216

I do find that the nose is out of round by .003 (.217-.220) also and the driving bands are .225 to .228 . the widest part is on the seams and narrowest is in the blocks.

I did run 10 threw my .225 sizer and it verifies the .225 portion by not shining it. Gas checks do fit well! I lubed with speed green and loaded the 10 with 24.2 gr of RE15. this is the load I use with NOE 225-55 FN also, that boolit clocks 2538 from my 16" 1-9 twist DPMS upper.

I then hit my 10" 130 yard gong 10 times.

Nothing at paper yet, these ten had just nicely cooled down.

Please post your results.

Please check your sprue plate...... If it is to tight when you close it (to tight with stopping pin) it causes that halves shift a little (In alignment pins is small air). That is 99% reason in such cases.

I will loosen the sprue plate, It is currently tighter than I run My aluminum NOE's. This is my first brass mold, and I set the plate to the same feel/tightness as it was on the original mold. That mold arrived with the Plate hinge screw seated tight against its shoulder.

I will back the screw out this morning so the plate swings free with little resistance.

The alloy in my pot at the current time is 75% WW 25% lino.

Ken

MiHec
06-14-2012, 06:57 AM
Not the tightness of the sprue screw. The problem is if this spot (see picture) lock to tight. Sprue should just stop on the pin (not lock). If "locking" occur, mold blocks moves (see picture).

Hope this helps.

If you have locking, then you can solve this with file (just open up sprue channel)

Click on picture for bigger one.

Mihec,

Mold Is cooling down now, I will check clearance of roll pin and sprue plate. I will touch it with a file to relieve it.

Free swinging plate did not help, I will look closely at this and open it up some.

Ken

Update 1:

Just checked sprue plate and had to remove .060 to .070 at arrow mark in your drawing to get the plate to close freely and squarely. ( I should have noticed this before0 ) The roll pin is 5mm, I choose a 5/32-5.5mm round file along with a 6' bastard to do the cutting with. The sprue plate was very easy to cut with my files, it is not hardened steel. ( Just real pretty).

Mold is once again re heating along my pot as I type this. I will give it another try this AM , then I defiantly got to do some other things.

Updates to this post will follow.

So far I have 4.5 pounds of out of round, pretty Boolits to run threw the pot again.

Update # 2 10:39 AM 6-14-2012 EST

WOW, I now have right on spec BOOLITZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and they are less than 1 thou out of round.

It was because these molds are now user assembled and I hadn't paid enough attention to the way the Spue Plate closed!

Thank you Miha for realizing I hadn't understood your response/answer and posting the photo of what to look for.

I just checked 8 different Boolitz that were still warm and they are right on spec and very round, no more noticeable seam line.

And now ALL cavities freely drop on opening!!!

Thank You,

Ken

I'm not on 45 2.1's list, but I also received my blocks yesterday. Gave the blocks a good cleaning and cast up a few. The first band after the lube groove was measuring .227-.228 which is perfect. Thanks Miha for the good work. Now to get some 22 cal gas checks from Blammer and get this party started.

Mine came in today! Just as beautiful and nice as my Mihec handgun molds. Hopefully I will have a chance to cast a few and check for deminsions. I expect it to be great though.

As I was looking at how many people had received there blocks I realized I hadn't checked the mail box. Very happy to see my blocks have arrived. Thanks MiHec. Any body here make there own gas check maker for this boolit? If so can you share specs or even better sell a gas check maker.

New to this. Would I have to slug my sig 516 to find what size boolit to shoot? If so how much bigger than my bore size does my boolit have to be? Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Local hardware stores don't have set screws that small (4mm-0.7)
I'll try a hobby store that carries RC cars

I received my replacement mould today. After assembling it, I've determined I need to make the sprue plate adjustment. No big deal. I'll get that done over the next few days and get some casting done this weekend. I'm really looking forward to casting in the 110 degree Arizona heat.

I just realized that if I let my boolits sit in the sun for a bit, they will be heat treated.

I just spent the weekend down there. Coming from the pines, I must say it was MISERABLE! 03:00 in the morning might be the best time to cast!

What kind of lube are you folks running with this boolit? All I have made up is speed green with a bit of carnoba dropped in.

This is my first brass and my first Miha mold. It's definitely a thing of beauty. Got mine yesterday. I'm going to fire it up this weekend and see how it casts.... though I did notice that my pins are sticking a bit. Will this work itself out when it heats up?

Cheers!
Make sure to use a good lube on the pins like Bull Plate if you have it.

This is the first time the temp has been below 100 degrees this early in the evening since I received my replacement mould (Great job MiHec, class act). I have been out casting with this wonderful mould. This mould is a pleasure to work with. The boolits just drop out when I open the mould with very few sticking. A light tap on the handle bolt and the boolit drops right out. My goal is to get at least 500 boolits cast tonight so I can get them checked, sized and lubed over the next few months (this I can do indoors).

Unfortunately it will be several months before I can get to loading any.

45 2.1, according to post #190, there are still close to thirty still waiting for replacement moulds, is this still fairly accurate?

As far as I know....... excepting those who will not report. I have been in the same boat waiting several weeks after everyone seems to have gotten theirs, then mine arrived. I don't really know, i'm just reporting who got them.
