View Full Version : Is Makers Mark seal carnuba?

I read somewhere during my internet wandering that the seal on the top of a Markers Mark whiskey bottle is carnuba wax. Does anyone know if that is true? If it is carnuba what percentage and what else is in it?

Yes it is true. The wax is carnuba wax, pure, I think. It's the same wax as can be found on cheese packages. BC

When I started buying it about three years ago it was wax,
The bottles I have bought recently seem to be some kind of plastic.
I haven't been saving the plastic stuff.
It may be just tougher wax but I am suspicious.

Not anymore, it's plastic.

I believe fecmech & looseprojectile are correct. I'll check later this evening and let you know for sure. Might have to check twice just to be certain!

I'll probably just buy some real for sure carnuba wax, but I just really really like recycling.

I removed the seal from a bottle last night; it's plastic.

Well, then, it used to be carnuba wax. Guess plastic has taken another place in the liquor business. Cutbacks probably forced them to change to something a little cheaper. Sorry 'bout that, chief. BC

Its a jubilant libation, full of awesome deliciousness, after the second sip on the rocks I dont care what it cost or what it was dipped in, I'm just glad its in my hand. That is some realy good bourbon. You may not be sitting in a snow covered hunting lodge with a crackling fire and a good dog at your feet, but that drink sure gives you that feeling for a minute.

Try melting some in a flame. Burning wax and burning plastic smell entirely different.

I am sorely disappointed to hear of this unfortunate development. The seal from a Maker's Mark bottle has long been a critical ingredient in "BD''s Pink", (actually FWFL with the MM carnuba added). Luckily, a single seal has enough carnuba for a double batch of FWFL, so I may not be forced to see my lube in the harsh golden light of specifically purchased caruba for another four or five years. Old I know but these guys got me skeered. I have a pretty good quantity of the Makers Mark "wax". I suppose a small testament to how much I enjoy it.
I guess I need to do some testing on what I have. I just watched a history channel show that showcased MM and they said it was the real deal (2015, to catch things up)
But this:
INCI name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INCI) is Copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax
E Number (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Number) is E903.
Melting point: 82–86 °C (180–187 °F), among the highest of natural waxes, higher than beeswax (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeswax), 62–64C.
Relative density is about 0.97
It is among the hardest of natural waxes.
It is practically insoluble in water, soluble on heating in ethyl acetate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_acetate) and in xylene (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylene), and practically insoluble in ethyl alcohol (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_alcohol).
Seems like a little testing should clear things up like mud.

I visited the MM distillery a few years ago. Walking by the bonding houses, I caught a whiff of a spring breeze coming out of one of the windows.

I now know what Heaven smells like.

Well, my freezer takes about 5 days to freeze my hand filled plastic ice cube trays. The ice is almost perfectly clear.
As a Makers Mark ambassador, I have a couple pretty nice glasses that make for fine sipping.
A few cubes and a generous "splash" of Makers Mark and I know what it feels like to go fishing, golfing, hunting, shooting or playing a video game in heaven.
Should'a bought a bottle on the way home.

Carnuba-based sealing wax was used for many years on spirits of all kinds. Today it is too expenive and most, if not all, are some kind of cheap lower-temp plastic alloy.

The foil on expensive champagnes and fine wines used to be real tin. Now all are Al foil.

Those little round red cheeses are not carnuba either.....they are a sticky waxy substance of some kind. I melted about 50 of them down and it was a total sticky red mess. REAL carnuba is VERY hard.

I use carnuba flake a lot in making my authentic custom antique furniture finishes and polishes. It is a high melting point vegetable-based wax from the carnuba plant. Used a lot on the shiny coating on pills, as it is 100% natural and actually digestible. Also used in high-end car polish, but sparingly.

You can find the wax at Woodcraft or probably from randyrat on here.

If you boiled your water before making ice cubes it would be easier to get clear ice due to the degasification.
