Got a 686-4 and engraved on the crane is a "200" that looks like it was done with the same tool that engraved the serial number. Any ideas what it could mean?

All my S&W revolvers have numbers stamped in this area. Many have the model # and part or all of the SN on the frame. They all have numbers stamped in the crane as well but they seldom make sense to me. I think they meant something to the folks in the assembly area, probably denoted the suitable handgun model(s), alloy, dimensions or maybe all of the above. I had an early 686 but can't recall the number on the crane.

I've been told that they are assembly numbers to keep all the applicable parts together in one bin until final assembly and inspections are complete and the gun is entered in the s/n log for ware housing until shipped. An in house tracking system, meaningless outside the factory.
