I've edged you out by 15 years, quit in 1974. Congrats!
Edit: Stopped smoking 10-4-71 ending a 3 pack a day habit. I'm sure I wouldn't be alive today if I hadn't quit.

Good on you, man! Nobody needs the grief booze or any other drugs bring. The peer pressure on young folk in today's world is devastating (I'm 72 and a little past that now). Great that you are winning! 'Tuck as in Kentuck

Congratulations Dennis. One of the best sayings I've ever heard was........ If you always do, what you always did........ You'll always get, what you always got. Made a lot of sense once I understood what they were saying.
Guesser, Mine's 7-4-77 and unfortunately, I still smoke Camels. I quit smoking for over 10 years and a buddy of mine invited me out to go Pheasant hunting. I hadn't been hunting for many years and just a few minutes out in the hunt a rooster got up and flew to the right. I nailed that sucker with the first shot. My buddy congratulated me and got out his pack of Camels. I asked for one and he said....... you don't smoke. I told him that I knew that and give me one. He did. On the way home we stopped to get gas and I figured that one cigarette every ten years ain't bad and bought a pack .......... yup. Right back at it. Never told anyone that I was smart.

Congrats Dennis and all.

Walked away from the distilled spirits Nov 1, 1984 after waking up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Swore off ALL alcohol for two years, then set myself a strict 2-beer or 2-glasses of wine limit.

Have been sober ever since. It was--and is--the distilled stuff that I'm positive even one shot of whiskey or one glass of gin and I'm lost again. As much as the military taught me to drink, it also taught me how my mind is stronger than my body.

I proved that last year by throwing the last of my cigarettes down in disgust and never looking back. I'd cut way back, but would never finish 'em out.

One day, I'd just had enough and got totally disgusted at myself for letting little paper-rolled things dictate one of my outlooks and behaviors. Threw 'em in a storm gutter and that was that.

It was tough for the first two to three days, then afterwards, I was surprised how easy it was to leave them behind and not look back.

What the mind can believe, the body will achieve.

Good for everyone here that's beat a demon.

That is great news.

I like to drink but never had a need to be consistent with it.

I got a chance at a cute little red head and she don't drink so neither do I now. SHE's a shooter too!

Peer pressure...
