friend of mine has a rapine mold. 600 grx, .735 I believe he said. hollow base like a minnie and the grease grooves are like the grooves on the r.e.a.l. bullet. it would maybe chamber in a 12 ga., but unless there is a tail fin assembly to spin it I don't see it as working that well. looks to be a muzzle loading bullet, but the diameter is bigger than most muzzle loaders I can remember. anybody know what this is for?

Sounds like a 1 3/8 ounce 12 guage slug mold to me.

That'd be my guess too.

To bad Ray retired and closed the shop. It was about 5min from my house.

Sounds like a custom 12 ga slug to me, too.

Tail fin, or not, accuracy is the same.
Rifled choke tubes can provide some increase to accuracy, some of the time; but not always.
Rifled slugs are not rifled to cause rotation of the projectile. They are rifled so the slugs will be more easily squeezed down, when passing through the barrel's choke. The fact that many rifled slugs have canted fins/grooves, is just for appearance and to make people think it does something.

But... Unless the choke tube or barrel are rifled, no fins, 'drive keys', riflings, or other doodads aid accuracy.

The most important features to incorporate into a shotgun slug, whether intended for smooth bores or rifled bores, is a hollow base. Creating a good, reliable gas seal (if not using a sabot slug), and/or making the slug nose-heavy, do far more for accuracy, than any type of rifling or 'fins'.

I think it's a 12 ga slug.

Sounds like the Rapine 735600 to me. I have a graphic of the three Rapine moulds:

- 660500
- 730550
- 735600

All are hollow base 12 ga. slugs. The 660500 is designed to fit into a shotcup and the other two are Foster style full bore slugs with lube grooves.

I had some 730550's a friend gave me and they shot fairly well from my smoothbore 12 ga.

SquirrelHollow is bang on about the wad column/gas seal ~ it has to be good.
