..............LEFT: Loaded cases with the left one loaded using the Mountain Moulds 43-420 RF. This slug was developed specifically to reach across the long throat and touch the rifling (see engraving in the right photo). The loaded case and patched slug on the right is the RCBS 43-370. While it has a longer OAL then the round using the MM slug, it does NOT engrave since the nose is supposed to ride the bore. The RCBS slug weighs 383grs with the alloy (10 bhn) I'm using. Both are loaded with 28.0 H4198 + dacron and a cardwad under the boolit.

Another photo with the MM design lub-sized to .440" and also one 'as cast'. I have a set of mould blocks made up and hope to produce a mould dropping a .434" smooth slug for paper patching. In any event, supposed to go to the range Tuesday next. That is if the wind isn't howling or it's not snowing up there (range is at 4200 ft).

I'll be following your report. I have a nice Argie and the Lyman ( xxx186?) mold is too small
to work very well, haven't tried PP yet.

.............Bill,

The above were fired @ 50 yards some years back with naked GG boolits, as indicated. The PP'd slugs at the range were fired at 100 yards, and I don't plan on taking pic's of those :-) Lets say I was a bit less then enthused:groner: They weren't wild, just a bit larger then I'd hoped for. The patched slugs were fired dry. I don't know if that had any bearing on it or not? I have 40 more patched RCBS's to try and will lube the patch for that try.

I fired both the MM 420gr and RCBS 370 patched slugs over 28.0grs of H4198 and 36 or 38.0 grs of surp 4895 (IIRC. I have the data but too lazy to go get it :-)) I added the 4895 as I ended up patching 10 more of the MM slugs. The lighter RCBS averaged about 1460 fps and the heavier MM design was only maybe 20 fps slower. I'll have to check my previous data but I was only expecting about 1250 fps. As per usual with PP'd slugs and smokless, the bore shone like a mirror.
