I'm showing pic's to help explain....
I bought this 45-90 sharps the chamber as seen is 23/4" ..
Question: what should be the length?
I just bought cases of 2.60 " which I thought would need trimmed but Now I'm confused. Starline cases I think...
And so I put a bullet on the case till it touched the lans in the bore without trimming... and as you see this is the measurement.
so should there be that much space in the chamber ???
Hope I'm not confusing everyone... [smilie=b:

Which Sharps? I have an imported Pedretti & Sons 1874 marked 45-70 that has a 45-90 chamber. No idea how it happened. Maybe a chamber cast would help clear this up for you.

This is a pedersoli and like I said the chamber measures 23/4" .. Seems over bored... but should there be free space in the chamber and that much?

Hard to say, my uneducated best guess would be a 45-100 with a generous chamber, possibly for PP boolits?

hhmmmmm.. shot great with the loads I put through it ... 10 rounds 3" group 100 yds... not too shaby for a quick load and fire....

You need a chamber cast or get one 45/110 case and chamber it for reference. My 45-2 6/10 is about 2.630 and starline brass is 2.590 after fire forming but so far have not had any leading with 20/1 and a grease groove at the end of the case.

Is it a new rifle, or pre-owned?
Pedersoli doesn't offer a 2.6" chamber, so yours may have been modified by a previous owner ... if it does accept a 2.6" case with it's mouth expanded to .459".

As others have already told you, you are just guessing until you do a chamber cast.

Gotta love that old dial caliper! I have one but retired it to other duties years ago.

Well I guess a chamber cast is the best way to see what I have..
This is a used gun but in like new condition.. the 45-90 stamp does look funky like the 9 was stamped over a 7...
I'll check it today..

My best guess is it's been rechambered to 45/110 (2 7/8")

Make a chamber cast. It's a simple project and it will tell you exactly what you have for a chamber.
When you measure the cast measure it from the front of the rim. and when you measure the brass measure it from the front of the rim not the total length of the case.
Trim the brass before sizing as it comes out of the chamber after firing the round and trim the brass .005" short. This will give the brass enough room to get pulled and lets it spring back with out going into the chamber throat.
Here, Old Larry Potterfield will show you how to do this. I dont us a torch I use a hot air gun when I melt mine and I preheat the chamber with the hot air and I dont use oil, this way it will make a wrinkle free cast of the right dimensions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgRp3r9VPE0&feature=endscreen&NR=1

and this is what the cast will look like when it's properly done.

BAW might be right about the re chamber job if it's a used rifle. If it is one to the older rifles with the cylinder free bore they might have re cut the chamber to eliminate the free-bore.
