View Full Version : What will get me close to Lyman "Orange Magic"?

I need a bullet lube that will work at rifle velocities (2,400 fps, possibly hitting 2,500 fps with .444 Marlin and .35 Whelen), and will not melt out of loaded ammunition.
I live in Utah. That means I spend a lot of time in the desert, and my ammunition can reach temperatures of 160 degrees F (or more) during the summer.

Lyman's Orange Magic seems pretty decent, and hasn't let me down yet, but I don't want to pay $5-6 per stick.

Does anyone here have any advice on a way to duplicate it?

I'm a complete newbie to lube formulation, so please provide details.

I would order some BAC from Lars. I have driven it up to 2700fps with no problems. I am not associated with them but do recommend their lube.

I'll check it out.

Any other suggestions?

the melt temp of bees wax is @170.
white labels carnuba red has a very high melt temp, compared to most other lubes i have melted.

You need to keep your ammo in the shade! LOL

Find me a tree, and I'll gladly store my ammo under it. ;)
Depending on what I'm wearing, even my clothing can exceed the melting temperature of some lubes.

I ordered some Carnuba Red from White Label, for myself; as well as a sample of BAC for my father to try.
(He's too cheap to buy a heater... but always overheats his luber/sizer with a clothing iron, and/or tries forcing RCBS lube sticks through it without any heat.)

(That's actually Wyoming.)

I've used Orange Magic and like it, other than the price, which is why I do not use it any more..., 'ceptin' than the few sticks I have left. When it's gone, it' gone forever. Then it's one more loob/sizer converted to FWFL.

I can run Carnuba Red in my RCBS sizer by using a hair dryer for heat.

Last year was really wet.
That photo was taken outside Farson, looking south, just across the Dry Sandy River from the "Parting of the Ways (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.257571,+-109.227962&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=0&hl=en&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=A)" marker, on September 10th.

i know the area very, very well.
i have worked in the jonah and on the mesa quite a bit over the last 7 years.
went through farson and eden 1,000+ times.
i would stop for ice cream in farson every chance i got.

I would either try Caranuba Red or Voodoo lube. the voodoo has the higher melting temp IIRC
