I'm thinking that you could start with Berdan-primed, BRASS cases, trim, anneal, and swage away. The head diameter is .447" IIRC, which should be just about ideal for this purpose. A bullet of .451-452" should be too easy; .458 should be almost as easy.

Any thoughts? Anyone tried it?

I agree. Numbers look like it would be perfect. I'm setting up a set of 45 cal dies this weekend. I'll see if I have any of that caliber of brass.

I turn them into 44 Mag bullets using my Hybrid process. Going to be poring cores into about two hundred jackets tomorrow.

no brass cases... but if i was really in a pinch I would anneal the steel and use them but it would be an Apocalypse situation.

I think it would work. I've made them out of .308, 30-06, .270, etc., though not alot. Just as an experiment. I cut them at the neck, leaving the shoulder, go down a half to 3/4 inch or so and cut again. Drop a core in and put shoulder down into the core seat die (you can use a gas check to seal the base if you want) and seat until the bullet is .4508 or .4518, depending on whether you want a .451 or .452 finished bullet. You may wish to anneal first, but military brass tends to be already annealed in the part of the case being used. I tried the same thing with 223 brass to 338 and it didn't work at those velocities (better with the base left on). These work fine at 45ACP velocities and a 3/4E Ogive. Can't speak for anything faster though. I don't come across much brass 7.62x39, berdan or otherwise. Blast those steel cases!

For swaging I have about 99 pieces of 7.62x39 berdan type brass cases; I have a handfull of .22 LR rimfire and about 62 pieces of 9mm berdan type brass cases. Would anyone want this brass for swaging? About half of the 7.62x39 brass cases I tried to convert to boxer primer but didn't have any success. If anyone would like this brass for swaging, please PM me and we can work out the details. BC

It's going to be at least a few months before I'll be looking for brass; I'm still in Korea and don't have anywhere Stateside to store anything like that. My son's patience is about gone - I've been sending stuff to his house and having him store it for me - after the u.p. north/aneat 'Iron Monster' swaging press I bought. I'll be returning to the States in a month or so, and then I'll have to get settled into a new house, get my bench built, etc.
