I have a new, to me, SS Hollywood press. I went back and bought a set of HGS .38 dies that the local gunstore also took in. I was ready to try some seating, but the original shellholder, that came with the press, turns out to be .45 acp, I think. :violin: I hope that was funny. QUESTION are these dies carbide?

Hollywood was high tech for back in the day and carbides were available.

To be sure without trying and risking a stuck case, look at at opening at the bottom. If there is what looks like a thick "wedding ring" within the die just at the bottom, then it is carbide.

Brassrat:

Can you post a picture of it?

CH/4D sells universal shellholder adapters for Hollywoods. They are called "Universal H-Rams" and go for about $10.50. Ebay also has them, along with caliber-specific shellholders.

Go ahead and get the universal from CH4D. They are good folks if you don't know them. If it is the Hollywood Sr. single hole press the hole the shellholder holder fits in is a 1/2" bore. If you are or know a machinist you can do all sorts of things with that!

I am past due in making that order to CH. The die seems to be a non-carbide, thanks for that tip. I took the dies apart yesterday and they were filthy inside, with some real thick gunk, on the threads. The outsides were nice. I will post pics, later when my camera charges. Let me know if anyone wants detailed ones. The inside of the decap/size die looks cool to me. Maybe cause I am a relative noob to reloading.

Well I am trying to make an order at CH. I guess I have to wait to be contacted. Here are a couple of pics of HGS .38spl dies.

Looks like steel dies to me.

Hi,
Those look like quality dies! Some people might say if they are steel to hec with them because you have to lube the cases and to much trouble. Even though all my pistol dies are carbide I still lube them with some "One Shot" spray lube. For rifle I use the die wax,but maybe you could get by with the spray and that would not be so bad!

They feel like quality. I guess that I will just seat with these. I am curious to see if I can get a better looking crimp than what I get with Lee. Just another variable for even better groups.
