Does any one have experience shooting flat nosed cast bullets in the .30 Carbine?

How large a meplat will feed?

Can you suggest moulds?

Do you notice any difference in effectiveness on game compared to the usual round nosed design?

Thanks.

Once tried it and it didn't work well. The carbine is designed to shoot round nosed bullets to ensure reliable feeding. You need a certain amount of "ogive" or curve to the bullet so that happens. Semi -wads are a hit or miss deal...as any significant flat surface will hang up. Jams aren't part of the carbine program and are annoying. No hunting experience with the carbine so can't comment on that. Lee makes a good RN if you want to go with Alu. I use RCBS 120 grain GC. Also check out Saeco & Lyman. All are round noses or kind of pointy. A number of good powders work well in the Carb. LLS

I have been using the Lee 309-120R mold to make bullets in my M1 carbine and they work.

i have been able to get the rcbs 98 rnfp [made for the 32 H&R] to feed in a 30 carbine with no issues.
it is a plain based boolit and is sketchy with extraction [mainly due to low powder charges] but it has no problems feeding.

I've used the 313631 SWC (105 gr GC'd for the 32 H&R), the 311316 and 311008 all with great success in numerous M1 Carbines. The oal needs to be correct and sometimes the feed ramp needs polishingand mag lips need a little adjustment but I've never had an M1 carbine that I could not get to feed with out too much trouble.

The 3118/311008 Lyman RFN for the old .32-20 seems to be about the limit and with some moulds you have to tinker with it a bit depending on what cherry that particular mould was cut with.

It is fairly easy to "tune" a RFN by bumping during sizing with a RN TP to decrease the meplat and get it to feed well.

I've messed with the 313631 in the carbine but it was just too much hassle to get to feed and wasn't reliable in mine. I'm not messing with mags or feed ramps so possibly it can be made to feed.

There's host of light .30s RN bullet designs out there that will feed in the .30 carbine and by hollowpointing one, you definitely get good expansion at velocities which will function the action. Usually all that is recovered is a .30 "button" as the nose has expanded and sheared off./beagle

I thought I answered this this afternoon. If this is a duplicate, please forgive.

I loaded about a zillion Lyman 3118s in my M1-Carbine. They were cheap, easy to cast, accurate and functioned flawlessly.

It is known as the 311008 now.

The Lee 113 RNFP works very well for me, no feeding problems.

get you another recoil spring and paint it . start cutting 1/2 in at a time and you will get a soft load that will feed.
as for hunting? dont know rats? mice? flies?
