I got one more tire shop to hit tomorrow in my continueing search for WWs. If I can't bribe the guys in the shop to start savin' 'em fer me, I'm gonna be in a bad way 'cause I'm down to about 30 lbs.
SOOOOO, my question is this: Can I make a usable alloy out out lead and 95/5 solder? I got lots of solder and can get lots of lead. By the way, can't find no linotype, either.
All I'm gonna be doin' is shootin at paper tigers and cans so I don't need NASA speed outa my boolits.
Any help y'all can gimme is much appreciated!

Jim

Thats how they used to do it in the old days!( and some still do) 30:1 ,20:1, 10:1 Lead/Tin .
It works for light stuff but it costs too much for me to use tin that way.

The problem with 95/5 + lead is the balance of Tin to antimony. In order to get enough antimony to approximate WW you'd be at 80% tin.

Jim, according to Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook, more than 10% tin does nothing to improve hardness, so beyond 10% you would be just wasting valuable tin.

I cant recall for sure as I am lucky enugh to have all the WW I can use, and dont cast high tin alloys. But I think Elmer keith used 20:1 &16:1 in the 44 mags and 10:1 in autos such as the 45ACP for feeding purposes. And also I think 10:1 was (fairly) close to WW hardness as cast.
